In wouldn't want to get there on a ship. The jet airplane stopped at Iceland , dropped off some personnel, and their sea bag luggage, then went on to the UK. I wasn't able  to go home on leave for a year. Been to a lot of air fields and NATO bases.
The Britts treated us like a bad step child.  >:(

  I was 2.5 years in Germany with no leave back home, although I had my wife and boys with ne part of that time.

  When we went to Europe, we only stopped at one place... Dover, England.. to pick  up a pilot who would guide our ship through the English channel.  White Cliffs of Dover; all I ever saw of the UK !

I saw the white cliffs of Dover, from the air. It seemed like i was always in the air one way or the other. Good ole Air Force accommodations. But i could always catch a hop back to the states, and then fly home with an airline. When I could get a leave, which was rare. Lay over at DFW, but they had a USO where i got food and a cot to get some sleep.

IG, we only did a couple of drops in ROTA SPAIN. I never got to see the sights of SPAIN, A drop to Germany, from when we had a tank. An M60 headed your way from Virginia, one air bound re-fueling, .i may have brought you your tank  ;).
If i had known you ,I would brought to you ,with some other goodies, we had a lot of other goodies.(USAF contraband). Didn’t met the manifest, oh well lol.  USAF, Your military FedEx, we did deliver a lot of mail and packages.

Rota, Spain..
  Never been to Spain, but my Marine grandson was, sailed there in a task force (22nd MEU).  In fact, he spent some time in Rota, where they picked up some up-armored Humvees.

     From what I understand, Those up-armored Humvees were the first ones acquired by the Marines, and a good thing
  it was, because his first day of combat, an IED exploded about 20 ft to the side of his Humvee..
   The result may well have been different, had his Humvee not been modified

  I don't have any info on whether the up-armored Humvees were used in Somalia.  His MEU (Marine expeditionary unit)
  Stopped by Djibouti to train some native troops.
   My grandson stayed aboard his ship, the USS Nassau, assault attack ship..because he had much gunsmithing to do
   on some battle weary weapons.  His armory was located at the 'brow' of the ship, just under the long yellow launch 
    line on the flight deck.
