we have to be careful what we wish for here. This isnt going to be something thats free. It also scares me that the libs will use the fact they can make not so factual claims its going to work for mass electrical production to push there ev car/anti fossil fuel agenda. Even if tomorrow, they could put units on line to produce the power we have no way to distribute it. Our electrical grid is falling down old and inadequate for the loads we have today and sure cant handle two cars in every driveway, powering everyone's kitchen range and electric heat for everyone. That upgrade will basically mean tearing down everything you see and starting over. It will cost us tax payers BILLIONS of dollars and take YEARS to accomplish. Most of us will pay dearly and be long gone before we can reap the benefits.  We still need to stop this attack on fossil fuels. Without them even if we have electric cars we need planes, trains, trucks and most importantly fuel to power our military. I doubt youll  ever see electric tanks and charging stations on the battle field. i would be alot more excited if someone came up with a more efficient way to transmit electricity then a way to make it. Dont get me wrong. Im not against this. But i made my living in the electrical industry and know where we stand and also know that that industry is regulated by the government and if that doesnt scare you nothing will. In the future lobbying in the electrical industry will make union lobbying look like the collection kettle the salvation army guy with the bell has in front of him.

Even if fusion produces masses of power for almost no cost...I doubt the public will benefit that much.

So many times in history a breakthrough has developed that makes things exponentially less costly, but it
doesn't filter down so inexpensively to John Q..

It has been reported that Nicolai Tesla developed a method whereby most homes would have abundant electrical power at practically no cost.  However, somehow we the public were never privy to such a  deal.

yup like i said the electrical company's are controlled by the government which means powerful politicians that want lobbying money and even own stock in them. Its the same reason there pushing solar. Not to make the earth green but to put more green in there wallets. If this happens it sure as hell wont be practical with a grid to transmit it in our lifetimes and if it is its going to be off the backs of tax payers and in your electric rates and what no doubt will happen is we will end up paying more because they will claim they have to recoup the construction, grid upgrades and R&D so either our rates go up or our taxes and as typical it will be a high raise in price then is actually needed and the electric company exects and the crooked in government will be the only ones that benefit. The polititians will use it to force electric cars down our throats too and make big bucks for themselves off of that. What people dont understand is our grid wont take it. They cant charge them in CA now. Even if they build 20 new huge nuke plants it wont help because they dont have the capacity to transmit that power. NOTHING that will fix any of these problems can happen until our grid is brough up to the capacity needed. Wonder how many of the global warming nut cases are willing to have there electrical bill doubled and there income tax doubled to bring this green energy to there door. Aint happening in our lifetimes. Only thing we will whitness is them forcing evs. electric heat ect down our throats on the promise of this
that is no more practical then charging an ev car in CA or hopping in it in CA and driving to NYC to see your parents. Its all smoke and mirrors

Tofday, California has many electric cars, compared to the other 49 states...  Has anyone noticed...California now has "rolling blackouts" ?

Yeah, I have mentioned fusion several times in past threads. The real promise of fusion energy is if it is developed along a user basis instead of a grid transmission basis.
Really there is no shortage of electric energy on Earth, but there is a shortage of E storage technology and practice. One way of storing E potential has been water dams.... essentially a battery. I am surprised that tidal dam/generation has not been developed. Twice a day a tidal dam/generation plant could produce E many times the scale of a single Hoover Dam.
.
Btw, the first commercial fusion generation plant is scheduled to go online in France in 5 years, and perhaps sooner in China.
.

On a user basis... then is there any chance John Q. will ever get it?  After all, it may cut some "big boys" out of the money chain..

ever wonder what it would cost to buy or lease a cold fusion reactor for your back yard. Only way a non grid system works is if everyone has there own. sure as crap aint going to be something you buy at walmart for a 199 bucks on black friday.  What will happen is just like with ev cars they will make them mandatory. So low income people will have to go with out while only the rich have electricity. Its just another example of the socialist utopia they want for this country. best case scenario and i seriously doubt it is they will lease one to you for more then what you pay for power while the grid is still up and running. I wont pretend to know how safe or dangerous they are but it makes me nervous to think there would be millions of reactors in about every back yard of everyone in the world. Sure seems like something could go very wrong.
IG....

Yes the PTB is going to guard their interest anyway they can. And this is why they made the announcement about hot fusion which you posted in your OP, and said it's decades away.
But what you need to understand is there are two kinds of fusion. Hot fusion in the OP is costly and high tech elaborate and we would be grid based slaves as usual. But there is cold fusion that is far less elaborate and is scalable and could be non-grid based. The PTB doesn't want could fusion out of the closet, but I think it is inevitable.

Coincidentally, here's Mike Adams explaining the difference in fusion technology.

Some developers of many diverse products, will make some outlandish predictions, just trying to gin up action, to get
people to invest in their firm.      Consider how the CCP virus (Covid) scarfed up huge funds for big pharma.

So, by baiting people on with "we are close to a cure"...builds their bank roll..often with new government infusions of
  money.

As I have said.  It is a historical fact that any new technology takes 30 years on average to become widespread.  Also, back in the 1920's and 30's any new invention to get better gas mileage was bought up by the oil companies.  They bought the patent rights and sit on them.

During WWII, another for instance.  GM developed the automatic transmission.  Ford developed the V8.  The government made each one pay the other like $1 for every one they made.  Thus by the 1950's all cars could be made with V8's and automatic transmissions.  Oil companies should have been made to release the patents so cars could get better mileage back in the 60's and 70's.

Tesla did not patent their battery technology and said others could use their charging stations.  However, the computers on competitive cars would notify Tesla and they would charge the customer more for the power used in charging.  So, the push for public charging stations.

Even if a power company is privately owned, they are regulated by the Feds and State governments.

Making electrical power is easier than making electric cars.  Power companies will, over time, put in wind, solar, or nuclear power plants to replace natural gas and coal.  Problem is storing excess power when the wind is blowing hard or sun in shining in the spring and fall and no one needs AC or heat.  This excess power has to be stored somehow for use during peek demands.  This is the expensive problem.

Vehicles may end up using fuel cells of liquid natural gas or hydrogen, which can produce electricity to run the electric motors in cars.  A hydrogen fuel cell car was recently built and drove almost 1,000 miles on one fill up.  Problem is we have no hydrogen infrastructure.  Natural gas fuel cells produce electricity, water, and carbon.  The carbon could be dropped in a pan, to be emptied, probably when they fill up with natural gas.  The carbon could be compressed into bricks to be used like coal, or used in making plastics or medicines or other carbon based products.  This system wouldn't put carbon dioxide into the air, but would still require drilling and fracking to get the natural gas.

One solution to hydrogen is to store it as ammonia.  Ammonia is 3 hydrogen atoms and one nitrogen atom.  This would allow transporting at room temperature in trucks or pipelines to hydrogen separation station.  Hydrogen if stored or moved as a liquid is -400 and something degrees.  No infrastructure for that.  But it would have to be liquified to go into cars with fuel cells.  This could be done at a gas station, converting ammonia to hydrogen and releasing the nitrogen into the air.

See, the problem is infrastructure.

No question, the government has it's greedy fingers and now it's "control freak" appointees, in far more places than they should be.

Our founding fathers, being exponentially smarter than the leftist professors and the woke crowd of "useful idiots",
knew full well that history is replete with a constant struggle of the people seeking freedom, and governments trying
to take that freedom away !

Knowing this, they provided us with a CONSTITUTION.. a document that we MUST cling to, and not allow to be
  in any way, infringed upon.

How does the laser get it's power? I am pretty sure it isn't fairy dust. Is it like the alcohol from corn for fuel thing that require more input to produce that the result produces or hydrogen which is the same at this point?

TM has a point about wave and tide energy. It is there 24/7 unlike the two things we are focusing on, wind and solar, neither of which come close to being constant like the tides.

I live in a relatively sparce population area and every direction I look at night I can see security lights, other wise known as help thieves see what they are stealing lights. The only big cities I see are on TV shows and miles and miles and miles of area is lit up almost like day. A lot of the homes out here in what used to be my little piece of heaven have two, three, or even four around them. On a moonless night I can just barely make out the north star. Simply turning off a bunch of unneeded lights would make a vast difference in our electrical consumption but I suppose there is no profit in that so it will never happen.

The lasers are powered externally, of course, what's special about this breakthrough is that the fusion reaction sparked by the lasers is supposed to generate more power than the lasers used to start and maintain it.

Yup...  It was something like 180 lasers using one megajoule of total power in, and i.2 megajoules of power was created...

Don't hold me to those being the exact numbers though...

Cold fusion reactors are said to be safe, even if someone blows one up there's no radioactive waste.
But I haven't seen one except in videos.
Remember the Brillion corp made bold breakthru statements a few months ago. I mentioned that in another thread which got closed.
.

Well, we're talking about the power of the sun.  Radioactive or not, if you blow one up it won't be safe.

Casull..,
I don't believe it's very serious blowing a cold fusion reactor scaled to heat and apartment building for example. A couple ml of H³ gets loose and the reaction stops. Blowing a connector rod thru on 426 hemi would be a bigger catastrophe.
..

Not quite.  Even theoretically, they don't yet have the materials to contain the heat of one of these things.  We are talking about an enormous amount of heat.  And, I don't think we'll be seeing any small scale units for a long time.

So called cold fusion is the slamming together of atoms to create new atoms with additional protons.  It's cold only in that it does not create radioactivity.  It releases enormous energy in the form of heat.  It's the same process that the sun uses in creating energy.

....,,,................................

Yeah, maybe depending on your biases.
I never gave the report much cred, then it was gone.

You got any sources on the story?
.
Just general news which has traced the source of the idea to posts on Twitter. The pictures show a ball of fire which is remarkably similar to the exhaust plume of a satellite rocket.
The Chinese are still very much in the tokamak stage of fusion.
Even the repository of research available at https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/search/p_=0&q=Cold%20Fusion&sort=date%20desc%2C%20bibcode%20desc
Has little to offer.
