Ever been in an earthquake?
« on: December 17, 2022, 04:24:32 AM »
I experienced my first yesterday. I was browsing the internet yesterday afternoon and my chair which has castors seemed to move slightly for a couple of seconds. I thought it was my imagination. Some time later our son called and wanted to know if we felt it. He said he saw the pull chain of the ceiling fan wiggling in the room he was in. Turns out it was quake and centered some where east of Midland, TX. It seems there is a fault line that runs from there to Artesia, NM. Just Mother Earth scratching a small itch and it has happened before although this is the only one I have noticed. We have had a few sonic booms from planes out of Cannon AFB over the years that were much more attention grabbing than this little earth shiver.

Plenty, stationed in Japan for four years, wife was knocked out of bed once, and another time the pins holding up a shelf with my coffee cup collection shook loose.  When I returned, was stationed in Savannah GA, one day my monitor began rocking, then noticed it did it everyday around the same time.  Turned out it was a train a mile from the house, had thought it was a quake.

Plenty here on Mt. Hood and also in coastal Alaska. But none where there was any damage. So far.

In Minnesota we had a slight one when I was a kid. I felt it because I was in the tree house.

Four best as I can recall. I only felt one of them and it was fairly minor but enough to be aware of it. Two were here in Alabama and the other two were when I was on temporary work assignment in Kalifornication. I didn't feel either of those only one here in Bama. I think it was rated a 4 or 5 and was less than 100 miles from me.

I’ve been around some strong tremors in California.  All they did was rattle everything and make dogs bark.

Felt one while at work a number of years ago. Took a bit to realize what it was, because earthquakes generally don't happen in Pa.

I can understand O-mega. I lived in Okinawa for three years as a kid. We had quakes fairly often. They'd dump produce off of grocery shelves into the floors, rattle toiletries off of bathroom shelves. Sometimes fun, sometimes scary when you're a kid.

Yep, and this part of Oregon too. I'm told they actually occur almost every where sometimes.

Experienced a couple that I know
of.  The ptb around here don't like
to confirm things like that if it can
be hidden somehow.
The most recent I can remember
made the dishes tinkle together,
and the couple of hanging ceiling
lamps sway a bit.
Nothing on the "news " about it
at all.  Later, I saw where a north
south major street about a block
away had cracked the whole length
of the street in a jagged crack
down the middle. About 4 inches
wide and about as deep.  Several
of the side streets had cracks and
developed weird potholes later.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

It was a 5.4 at it's epicenter which was a few miles north of Midland and reportedly felt all the way to Carlsbad, NM. There was also one of 5'3 magnitude a month before and located a little east of this one according to the news. I didn't feel a thing and don't know anyone that did.

How about a direct hit from lightning on your house. It sounded like a bomb went off, it damaged a lot of things in the house.
Light bulbs, ceiling fans , and an appliance , insurance payed for it.  Came through the 240vac side of things. Didn’t harm the LEDs. Lots of breakers tripped, some had to be replaced.
