Guess I'm a girl friend. Looks like something from a motor vehicle, but I don't know what it is.

Gene, think AR15. There is an entire forum on this site that covers this. In depth ,even if you’ve never served in the military. I can hear that Drill Instructor screaming now  ;D He would call you a lot of things.

Thanks. I was an engineer in the Air Force, but I never fired an M16. I did one time shoot my son's AR 15, just to say I had. I like single shots myself.

.

I was in the Air Force , and was still trained with firearms in basic training. I was only an  E6 air crewman and our aircraft had weapons in it. Just in case we had to fly over, or land somewhere more hostile and make a drop. Like an engineer, or an Army company of soldiers with all their equipment and gear. Air Force had to face that fact also.
So we were handed a rifle while on the ground , protect the aircraft and what ever the cargo might be.

I still cringe thinking about when i saw that mess going on in Afghanistan. All those people hanging on the aircraft as it was taking off. They couldn't have lasted very long. In my military days it was the fall of Saigon, our squadron wasn't involved with that though. We were half way around the world when that went on.

i thought weapons training was in every service branch boot camps. Went through coast guard and we had a week of range time and weapons maintenance with ars and 1911s and in prior service navy boot we had to qualify on the range with both ars and 1911s. Where you possibly in when they were still using m14s? I know the air force used alot of m1 carbines back in the day too.

Guess I am a girl too..   My service rifles were the M1 Garand, the M14 and the M1/M2 carbines. I have no interest in
the Mattels, even though 3 of my grandsons have them. In fact, one grandson is one of the leading AR15 gunsmiths in the country.

The ARs are good guns...I just can't warm up to them.

By the same token, My late wife could have bought me a T-shirt with either of these on it..saying, "if your boyfriend doesn't know what this is..you have a girlfriend".

Well, I recognize all of the above, one due to 21 years in the military, the other because of YouTube and an interest in making knives and other metal work. But I would think anyone would identify the first one due to all the anti 2A b.s. saying it's what's wrong with the world.

I did not know that the Air Force had "trains". :-[

Well, laugh if you must, I did HS ROTC where we shot M1s  and AFROTC in collage where we shot nothing. No trains in the AF, but lots of runways and a few roads, power plants, etc. My only overseas tour was 3 months in Iran during the time of the before the revolution there and some time in Alaska where the only reason to carry a gun was when you went for a walk you might meet a Brown Bear. Just the way life works out.

coast guard takes it seriously too. Much more so in boot then it was in navy boot when i went though. With all the bordings, drug busts, playing in not so freindly countries with not so friendly people its even more important the cg today then it was when i was in. Drug interdictions back them were done by a  very small group of coast guard. Today there are two complete special forces the msst and the msrts and then theres a group of snipers that are trained as hard as any sniper in any military. Try taking out a person or motor on the back of a boat going 50mph in the waves out of a moving helicopter. Navy for me being prior service was just a qualifying shoot that took about 2 hours. Coast guard even back when i went to boot had a whole week of small arms  training. It was a transitional period for weapons so we trained the the m16 m14 and 1911s. Qualifications were much stricker for the cg too. Navy you basicaly passed if you hit the paper. Coast guard we had to carry a 16 (without a firing pin) everywhere we went. Navy the only time i touched a gun was that 2 hours.  Dont really know what they do today. When i went in boot was 16 weeks and the longest boot camp of any service. I think its 8 weeks now due to budget cuts. We even had a week of defensive and evasive driving where they had special cars that would spin like on ice at the touch of the instructors button. It was taught by the same branch of the government that trains the fbi and the secret service but there training was much longer. Never did figure that one out. Only goverment vehicles i ever drove were 4x4 dodge pickups.

My grandson when in Spec Ops had a regular routine, where they would wait for a moderately rough surf at Camp
LeJeune, and take the Marine Spec Ops out, and have them stand in a boat and pick off bottles, that churning in the distant  surf.
After their second deployment, the man who "had his back" while in close urban combat, went on to train snipers shooting from choppers.

My grandson was interested in Joining the CG, before he chose the Marines.  his plan was with the .50 cal on drug interdiction crafts.
The way it worked out though...his .50 was mounted atop a Humvee.  :D   ;D

dont know if he would have got a 50 to shoot unless he was a chopper sniper. Youd probaby gave to get into something over a 100 feet to rate a 50. we were at a reunion in FL 6 years ago and i talked to a couple guys that were stationed on the presidential chase boats and they said they had those dillon style gattling guns on there boats. Back in my day we had a home made mount for a saw on a 21 foot boston whaler outrage. Other then that it was 16s m2 carbines and 1911s.

never seen one but the cg doesnt use many whalers anymore. They mostly use rigid inflatables now.

We did ,it was close to how the Army trained. Way back before queers in the military and what we see now days.
No IG, the AF did not use kid gloves on the recruits. The Navy had a Fleet Prep school in Memphis TN. They went there after basic training, i don't know anything about that school. We called it the squid school. 8)

if im recalling this correctly i think my step son who was in the air force from 2015 to 2019 said that they didnt have weapons training other then a qualifying shoot that i believe he said they shot 75 rounds out of an ar15 at various ranges and if they hit 30 targets they qualified not bullseyes but just hitting the silhouette anywhere .  He said when he got posted into a combat zone he then had to have weapons training. He had probably the worse job in the air force. He had to load the coffins into the plane to take home.

When my oldest son was 17, he got badly injured in when he rolled my truck, and became a parapelegic.
He was already signed with the Air Force to enter some kind of an Air force program of specialists..some kind
   of Spec Ops...
I never got that clear, but some of those troops dealt with dogs, security and other risky stuff.  After his accident,
I had to put any thoughts of that aside and concentrate on his recovery.

..But I found out that way, that the Air Force did have some form of elite troops.

im not to familar with the air force so maybe someone here can correct me but the only special forces i know of in the air force is the PJ's. What the air force does have more of then any service is various intelligence groups.
