I got this off of a hunting newsletter,

Quote
Update: Maine Bear Baiting Initiative Headed For Ballot

AUGUSTA, ME—According to Maine Secretary of State Dan Gwadosky, an initiative to ban bear baiting in the state garnered nearly twice the number of required signatures to force a referendum.

Gwadosky says the petition from Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting had more than 97,000 valid signatures, 50,000 more than needed to send the initiative to the state House of Representatives.

State lawmakers will now decide whether to send the proposal to voters. Maine Gov. John Baldacci has said he and his administration oppose the initiative.

Maine sportsmen should contact their state representatives and encourage them to vote against this initiative.

Is Maine Govovernor John Baldacci really going to let this go to the public?  While I don't bait bears(It's a personal thing not because it is against the law here in Calif.) but I do recognize that baiting is viable way of controlling the population of Black Bears(which needs to be done here in Calif.).  I hope the hunters/public in Maine vote down this obvious attempt at stopping/banning hunting.  I got my fingers crossed for you.  Lawdog
