When I turned to look at the line I was furious. Everyone in that line was well over 70 years old.
You listen here Mr. 20 something year old  Walmart Associate. These folks are the back bone of this country.  These folks are not lazy. They were not born into a computer generation. While you were playing video games and learning to navigate a computer they were working in the cotton fields, in cotton mills,  plowing fields and harvesting crops.

Can still work circles around you and they have a work ethic and drive that you probably know nothing about. Just because someone doesn't feel comfortable using a self checkout does not make them lazy.
And before I forget it... those lazy people pay your salary. Instead of you and others walking around being judgemental someone could have offered to help them on the self check out.
If you ever have to get your vegetables from the ground instead of the produce department guess who you are going to need help from... those lazy people!

A while back a lady at our Fred Meyer offered to help me self checkout. Told her no thanks, but that is going to work you out of a job. As she left, she turned to say thanks and I noticed that her badge said she was a manager. The management knows what is coming. Freddy's now has lots more doing the shopping for those who pick up outside. Maybe that's what the buggy makers transition to.

How is helping yourself to an end goal, being mistreated, or "trained"?

Don't think I have ever used one, but it's a matter of principal for me. It does someone out of a job. It's actually more convenient to pump my own gas, but it also does someone out of a job.

LOL, Let's see. You don't mind getting out in all kinds of weather,  and pumping your own gas, but won't check out your own groceries, as a matter of principle?

I guess it only has to make sense to you, but there is more of a problem getting folks to work, than a lack of jobs.

I am more about gettin what I need, or want, and gettin on my way than standin in line, and havin some kid struggle with makin change, put my bread and chips in the same bag with the canned goods, and scan my card, but to each his own.

I don't like it because it allows them to have less employees and I don't see any price reductions from it. I also don't like to do it because all the bending gives me a backache. My solution is to call one of the employees standing and watching while basically doing nothing over and asking them to do it which helps ensure that they will continue to have a job and get a little exercise to boot. If the lines aren't too long at the two manned registers in our store I go there to help the checkers continue to have a job. The only reason we go to Walmart is we can usually find an electric scooter for the wife to ride. I can drive just a half mile to Albertson's where the prices are as good, a checker will ring up and sack my purchases and someone will push them out to my vehicle if needed. Finding a scooter there is iffy though.

Make change? No problem as I use a credit card.

My back hurts with to much bending also. There’s a place in Lubbock that sells electric scooters and E Bikes. There was one E Bike that i wanted to buy, it looked off road. $1k though.

Actually I live in Oregon, where you are not supposed to pump your own gas. So I don't. I'm also opposed to unloading the truck for Freddies and I stopped going to Taco Bell locally while they would not take your order. You had to use the kiosk. Now that they gave that up, we stop there sometimes again. Each to his/her own.

The time to eschew the self check line
was decades ago when wallyworld first
started using them. It's way too late now
since they're firmly embedded ( here anyway)
Last time I looked there was like 24 + -
self check and 2 cashier staffed registers.
and many pickers roaming the store for
outside pickup grocery sales.  I have
several relatives that haven't been inside
a grocery store in a couple of years now.
Just me-  I'll pick out my own goods

An observation-
The electric go carts here are preempted
by the large round black women with
designer sweats and 200 dollar nikes.
I haven't seen but a few truly disabled
people using the disabled amenities
in ages

I'm old and not very tech savvy. I have no clue how to self check out and am not going to learn. If a place doesn't have cashiers to check me out after I fill a buggy I'll push it aside and walk right out of that store.

If they want my money they damn well better have cashiers to check me out and to put the stuff in bags for me. IF not I can find another place that does.

Our big Dollar general still does that. And they supply a lot of our needs.

Right on.......Me 2. If they want me to use a self check, then show me how much I can save doing it. I may use it then, but if they refuse to save me money doing it........Shove it. I don't have a problem with someone else using it. To each his own!

One of the big problems with having a checker these days that I have seen is the checker doesn't have a clue on how to sack your groceries because the store they work for didn't bother to train them on what goes in which sack. Crushed bread, cracked eggs and bruised tomatoes really don't thrill me with having a checker and I prefer to do it myself when buying those things.

 Since the enforced $15 per  hour wages for burger flippers, more fast food outlets are getting into forcing customers into playing video games, just to get something to eat.
  We don't have any of these stores around here, but when I travelled into Pennsylvania, I used to grab some chow at the Sheetz convenience stores.  I rather preferred their food over other fast food places.

  However in recent years, when you go into their deli, you better be ready to go through the hoops of playing video games on a touch screen, if you want to order anything.

  Now days, I just drive on by to another place..which also means I don't top off my gas tank there either.

I expect to be waited on in a restaurant/Cafe, or gun store. The grocery store (before self-check), I, like everyone else, would look for the "shortest checkout line".

With self-checkout, I get my stuff, scan the bar codes, stick my credit card in the slot, and get the hell outta there.

I like folks that insist on being checked out. While they're standing in line, I'm leaving with my stuff, and they didn't hold me up.

If you like standing in line, I think that's great. Makes my entry, and exit much quicker, and I don't have to stand in the middle of all that coughing,  and wheezing.

As 2022, 21 states and District of Columbia require background checks for at least some private sales of firearms; of these, 16 states and the District of Columbia require background checks for all gun sales.

May as well pay with a credit card if you live in one of the 16 as I do!
