Where to Find a Good, Cheap Sandwich in Every State
« on: February 17, 2023, 12:53:31 PM »
https://blog.cheapism.com/best-sandwich-every-state/

I am not putting this here because of Minnesota but the one in South Dakota which is only141 miles straight West on a road I used to drive very, very often 25-50 years ago. (Only have driven it 3 times in the past 20 years and last time was ten years ago.)
I used to judge restaurants in this area by how good their Beef Commercial was, plus it is only 56 miles South of Big Stone City which has a LOT of stands of cheap fireworks July 5th, the last day they can be sold in South Dakota.

Watertown, SD -- What they call the "hot beef combination" at The Wheel Inn is the same as a hot beef commercial, or just hot beef in other parts of the country. Two slices of fluffy white bread are filled with sliced roasted beef, then topped with a generous scoop of real mashed potatoes and covered in thick, luxurious beef gravy. In the cold South Dakota winters, you need meals like this.

WOW!  Yeah..sounds like just the ticket for lunch on a sub-zero South Dakota/Minnesota day..and yes, think Fargo
   too!!

I can see it now..  The Mack log truck pulls into the diner lot..big man in plaid lined Carhartts, steps down and flipd back his hood. A freshly loaded rig, running from the woods to the mill...

A hot coffee and a sandwich like that would be a real "picker-upper" for such a guy !

Here, such a meal might be Corned beef hash, eggs, & home fries, or some local specialty such as one of the many "garbage plate" recipes as served around the Rochester, NY area..

Nick Tahou's Garbage Plate -- the original.

Reading the article they spoke of Charlie's Restaurant chain, WELL, about thirty miles from here in Freeport , with all 640 residents there is:

A well known place to chow down in this part of the state (Sadly a even smaller town about another 40 miles NorthEast of Freeport , had a restaurant listed in one the best in state lists, and it burnt down about 7 years ago.)

Hey..I found Charlie's on Google street level, and on Main St. too!.  ..Hmmm 640 people in Freeport..Charlie's must be a favorite gathering spot too. Probably if somebody spent a couple days there just checking, he would likely meet at least half the residents in town.. :D ;D

If you click on this you will see down town ESSIG and Carl's Corner which is listed as the best fried Chicken in Mn by a poll whose office is 90 miles east.
Essig is 40 people but if you click and mosy down the road , one can see it used to be a bit bigger (Abandoned by the railroad which killed a lot of Mn towns.)

Essig is approx. 100 miles due South of Freeport.

Looks like a great little town..and likely with a very low crime rate.  Probably better called a "settlement" rather than a town.. but looks like a nice place to live..

Tiny's Burger Barn in equally tiny Tatum, NM used to put together a great burger but I haven't been in Tatum at lunch time in years so I have no ides of their quality now. I will say that it and the Steak House are the only two eating establishments that have managed to remain in business there so they are probably still good. I have to get my driver's license renewed each year now and I drive up there early in the morning to avoid the local DMV and then we go to the Steak House for breakfast. It's always good and you certainly won't leave hungry unless you are a total glutton.

Sadly...it is highly likely that some great little eateries were finished off by the plandemic.  First the lack of sales & attendance...now try to find good, dependable help..

Funny, I made what I called a gut buster for breakfast. It’s basically anything you throw together that you really should not eat...

It did a bunch of them in in NM. The guv's iron mailed fist approach was mostly responsible. Big box stores were allowed to do what they wanted if masks were worn. Not so with the small businesses. It was shut down and if you refused you were hit with a $5,000 a day fine. SO and city police refused to enforce the shut down so uniformed SP came around and explained the rules and then plain clothes SP came sneaking around to find noncompliers.

Very early in the plandemic, I was shopping in DG one day.  I was shopping in a side aisle, when some tall, lean guy with a mask started to berate me for not wearing a mask.

          Lean Guy: "Where's your mask?"

Me:  "Don't have one, don't plan on getting one either."

Lean Guy: "The law says you have to wear one!"

 *        Me: "Enjoy your Koolaid."

In this area, the yuppie mindset has
shut most of the old decent places
down.  A good many expect every
place to be like tgi fridays and have
all different alcoholic drinks and
the accompanying appetizer type
foods, or be similar to McSalty's
and offer a hundred different menu
items. You have to get far out of
town to find an old fashioned eating
joint that serves exceptional food
with a plain shabby decor
Not much left nearby except for booger
queen and jack in the crack and
McSalty's
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

I'd like to find someplace that offers a REALLY GOOD Rueben.  'Round these parts, (Iowa), I keep running into average, mundane Ruebens.  It's gotten to the point that I think I need to find a traditional Jewish deli in NYC to get one.

If you ever get up to the Twin Cities in Minn., go to Cecil's in St.Paul, the last suviving old deli in Minn. since Lincoln Del closed twenty years ago.

It is in an old neighborhood,  with houses across the street, not some woke crap hole.

Why, Thank You, Bob.  I do make it up there about once a year.  I drive my '23 T-bucket up for the BTTF thing in June.  (Making a self-note on phone.)

State Police, just like SO for Sherriff's office. Clear now?

There is a little old hotel about 20 miles north of me..situated at a little crossroads settlement.  I don't believe it is actually an operating hotel, but more a bar/restaurant.  I haven't been by there for some time though.

In any case, they have specialized in their own Reuben sandwich, for many years now.  It must be good, because some follks drive long distances just to get one of them.

Oops!  Looks like it is called Smokey's now, and is up for sale..

Sad,  very sad, but restaurants are a 24/7 type of world and and todays snot-faced punk attitudes do now to move to the boonies, much less bust their butts, so places close when owners decide they do not want to die in the kitchen trying to keep an lost cause alive.

Good bad or other wise, up here some old school ma and pa joints are being replaced with Latino restaurants.
Chinese do not want to move out to the boonies but Latinos must feel at home.
Even at that , too may places are coffin corners where joints come and go till the place is finally torn/burned down.

Kind of like what has happened to Supper Clubs in Minnesota.
Where I am at right now, Ribs joints come and go, came and went, at very high level.
Although many due to new building owner and rent jacked up by fifty to one hundred percent; as I think of it the entire city is a coffin corner for food joints of near any type.
The bigger it gets, the less it has of any sort.

Sorry you have to deal with that. UnAmerican to use police in that way far as I’m concerned.

Neighbor's Mill in Harrison, Arkansas or Stoby's in Russellville or Conway.  Not perfect, but very good.
