Banana flip..
« on: February 24, 2023, 07:09:28 AM »
A snack desert that was quite popular years ago, but seems to have lost it's steam in recent years.
The banana flip was rather unique, in that it was first baked as a small, shallow cake, then folded and unlike the
Twinkies, is filled with a rich banana flavored cream.

Unlike the Twinkie, which strikes one as a "manufactured" snack, this seems to have the sense of a product from a smaller bakery.
Haven't seen them in many years, but from the following article, it appears that a southern bakery has decided to
   produce them once again.

Wow, I have not read or heard that term in at least 45 years.
I never had one besides the one from Hostess. 8)

I don't care much for eating a plain banana but love banana pudding. Christmas is about the only time that appears around this house though.

Damn IG, I thought you’d posted a recipe…had me hoping for something good tomorrow. Sounds easy enough to recreate though.

Haven't looked for one of those
in a long time
Last thing I bought of that flavor was
the little debbie banana twins, just a
different configuration of basically the
same thing.
I'll have to look at one of the meskin
stores around here for one.
They're big on strawberry and banana
flavored sweets.
If I remember correctly,  the larger cake
was called a Banana Dream, and it was
either Dolly Madison or Hostess.
( are they the same company now  ?)
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Maybe the photo below will help.  I believe it is simply a vanilla cake about 5/8 inch thick, folded over a banana cream.

..But where to get that cream.?  SomehowI recall that cream to be a richer flavor than the cream found in Little Debbie or hostess products..

There was one of those snack vending machines in our hanger that sold those things called a banana flip. One of those guys was from the Philippines. He would get upset when someone would say that lol. Apparently he thought it was an insult.
The ground crews would just laugh at him.

Since he was a Filipino..It seems like there was a impolite term years ago, which shortened the term Filipino, to Flip.

...But that is such an outdated term..I doubt many use it anymore.

This got me curious so I checked online.
It seems that the 21st century decided the Banana Flip should cease to exist but it appears Nickles brought it back in one region.
It also seems that it was created in the 50s. and is not an old fashioned recipe. 8)

Hmmmm... Don't know how that computes...since I remember them as a young kid.  ...And by the time the 60s rolled around, I was no longer a kid, having graduated high school (1954) and served one hitch in the military before the 60s.

I added ten years to its history but there very little solid history.
Most site say it was big in the sixties and seventies, one did say it was around in the fifities.

I found this.. It looks like there may be a bakery right there in Hibbing, Minnesota which makes them..
