Lyman Peeps and Zero
« on: March 14, 2004, 03:13:43 AM »
I've seen the Lyman peeps that mount to the tang.

For those of you that use these sights, how well do the rifles maintain their zero after you disassemble the rifle for cleaning?

Do the barrels lock up tight enough to prevent much movement, or are you resighting after every cleaning?

Also don't have the Lyman, only T/C on a couple of rifles.  No change found here after taking off the barrel.

I have that sight on my GPR and it stays zeroed. I love that sight! With the larger diameter hunting one screwed in I can see the sights again. It has helped these old eyes a bunch.

Assuming the tang sight is mounted correctly, the limiting factor for accuracy will be: How repeatable is assembly of hook breech-to-tang?

This is analogous to a Q-D scope mount. There must be slight slop in the assembly or it would not assemble. I just bought a "shooter" Lyman GPR. I believe the tolerance question is moot. Powder fouling will almost certainly conceal any minor seating of the barrel assembly.

I have a question for you, though. Since the Lyman rifles, especially the GPR, are not bad looking, have you considered investing a little more money to buy XS Systems' Ghostring Aperture sight system? Even though I intend to use my GPR for a short time, I'm leaning toward XS sights because they do not detract from the overall appearance of the rifle nearly as much as Lyman's. . . . Not a recommendation, just a thought.

I mounted Lyman 57 SML receiver sights on a T/C Hawken and on a Lyman Great Plains Rifle, both in .50 cal.  Neither rifle has ever had to be re-sighted in after removal of the barrel and cleaning, although I do check the sights before every hunting season.  The Lyman receiver sights are a very high quality sight, and I really like them.
Good luck!

t/c peep sight

I am thinking in ordering a tang peep site for my t/c flinter hawkens rifle.
I see that D@R has them for $35.88 not a bad price for the sight,do I have tp replace the stock front sight on the hawkens?
My next question is I did come across a williams peep sight that mounts on the barrel in the same place were the stock rear sight sits.has anyone tried the willams sight.
I wolud think the closer the peep the better the eye can pick up the sight picture ,what do you guys think ?

I've done a couple and did not have to change the front sight.

I haven't used the Williams sight, but  I have used a full buckhorn style sight as "large peep".   It worked OK, but a rear mounted peep would have been better.

Lyman 57 SML receiver sight

I mounted Lyman 57 SML receiver sights on my Deerstalker.
I haven't gotten use to using it yet.

I did modify the front site. I didn't like the white bead.  So I removed it and filed the site to a point. I get a much better site picture and more accurate shots.

11/28/2005 - I'm have a problem seeing the front site in low light and against a dark foreground. So I'm now at the point I want to change to Fiber Optic sites.  I found some made by RMC FIBER OPTIC SIGHTS with TRUGLO FIBER OPTICS. Hopefully I'll have a chance to buy them to try out.   http://www.rmcsports.com/

Oh, and I removed the Lyman 57 SML receiver sight. I don't get a quick site picture with it when hunting.
