Daylight savings time begins tomorrow. Wake up, all you sleepy heads.
That sucks the bag. >:( >:( >:(

The daylight saving time debates

As scientists at UT Southwestern and around the world continue to delve into the effects of daylight saving time, the topic continues to spark debates in legislative circles, too.

In Florida, for instance, two senators recently introduced a bill called the Sunshine Protection Act, which would keep the U.S. on daylight saving time through Nov. 7, 2021, because, they state, “Americans are already dealing with enough change and other disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic.” (The legislation appears to be stalled in Congress.)

Permanent daylight savings time; however, is not recommended by the scientific community. Studies have shown that residing on the most western border of time zones, which is similar to being on daylight savings time, is associated with increased risks for cancer. Rather permanent standard time is the optimal solution.

The European Union voted in spring 2019 to do away with the biannual time changes next year, and several other U.S. states are considering similar legislation – largely because of the health risks posed by time changes twice a year.

While there is still a lot of uncharted territory in the field of circadian rhythms and sleep medicine, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that spring-forward, fall-back is not the best choice for the 21st century.

"It's 5 o'clock somewhere"...  I think we have all heard that before..

Sorry scientists, but are you the same guys who are producing propaganda for the "climate change' devotees?

Pick any hour you want, how in blazes does that artificial construct affect natural cycles...

Howmis nature affected by  what number, letter of symbol may be assigned to any given hour?

We should simply standardize times across the country..

If circadian rhythms are upset..and sleep troubles result,  they can take that into consideration.

If your zone for health's sake, requires you to start at 7oclock instead of 6..or simply adjust the work hours of any
job to fit what is most healthy.

Frankly, I think it is time to do as our military and much of the world already does...and use a 24 hour clock !

..Forget the often confusing AM and PM...

I'm still trying to get a correlation with this statement.  Just how is there an increased risk of cancer with DST, as compared to standard time?  Either way, there's a time zone change just a short distance to the west of any given subject, and I just don't see where it would make any difference.  I think they're "reaching" for some reason.

Maybe I'm not supposed to understand it.....Roger

It means the sun sets later and comes up later than the average, middle, of the time zone.

There have been many studies on how change of time screws up peoples system, jet lag is another time change that some people have real trouble with.
There is zero reason for daylight savings time, it should be eliminated.

Living on the East edge would be nasty if you worked in the other time zone as you would lose an hour going to work.

That I get.  It's the supposed correlation of higher cancer risks/rates just because you're living on the west edge of a time zone that I question.
Still, there does seem to be a hint of insanity with DST.

So let us instead of calling the hours 1:00, 2:00, etc...call the hours A,B C..etc

Now tell us why B is worse than A..or C better than both?  "Come on, Man"! Those are just numbers or letters...

How does the nature of time or space change by what number or letter is assigned to it ?

You do know time zones were set up for the convenience of the Railroads publishing their schedules. Before the RR, every town had their own time based on the sun and that worked because travel on foot & horse back was slow. Funny that never shows up in movies or books (Google it, I can't figure out how to copy the link with my tablet). Actually the first few years of my life, we lived in North Platte Nebraska which is in the central time zone and everything West was in the Mountain time zone. Just a fact of life, but I don't remember it being a big deal. But I sure dislike changing from std to daylight time.

I don't believe the cancer thing. I grew up slightly east of the wester edge of the central time zone but now live just a few miles west of that edge. I have had a bunch of skin cancers while living basically in the same area all my life. Very light complected humans are much more likely to develop them than very dark complected ones. The intensity of the sunlight and how much you are exposed to it is the culprit. I could go into more detail about my reasoning but won't. I am just stating that I think the cancer thing is just some some more hooey about the failings of daylight savings time. At 85 years old it has never been a problem for me and wouldn't be to most if they didn't want to find something to be upset about. It's one hour for crying out loud. Your body will adjust quickly.

Our congress is so pathetic they can't even make a decision on leaving daylight savings time permanent. How many different bills have been introduced over the years to do this? Maybe 4?  I myself would rather have daylight savings time permanent. Just like the extra hour of light in the evening hours. Especially during winter.

Only moron congress men voted for it this last time because they did not read the bill it was attached to.
If the left human debris in Minnesota ever let that happen they would lose the entire Northern half of the State that now helps them stay in control/

Parents do not like have to take to school, or let them stand outside waiting for a bus, an hour before sunrise in winter, having to do the same two hours before sunrise when winter temp. up here hit bottom, would not be tolerated.

Trying to think the last time I saw kids standing outside waiting for a bus. They are usually sitting inside mom or dads car, or waiting inside until they see the bus coming. From what I have seen in kids that do stand outside for a bus, they need to be taught how to dress when its cold.

LOL, as it is in the North kids often get home after sundown, gee, lets make it an hour after sundown in the middle of winter, so the bus taking kids to the country has to drive country roads at night  , birlliant.

Just get  rid of the morinic Daylight Savings time which is a fool's folly, or man being a God wannabe.

Hell, let's just do away with time altogether. Wait, someone wouldn't be happy with that either. The sun rises and sets with no concern if humans are pleased. Someone is always going to be unhappy with man's solution for dealing with it. Personally, living where I do, I would be happy with year round DST. Someone close by would probably gripe about it. It's human nature to be upset about something and twice a year it's DST. Take a chill pill, get a grip, and deal with it. Life will be easier if you do.

Edited to add: The first two years I had to walk 3/4 of a mile to the schoolbus and then back home, fall, winter, and spring. I didn't think a thing about it. I was a little kid and the nearest neighbor's kids did the same. It was just the way things were. Two years later the county cut a new road and I had about a 150 yard trip but if you weren't there ready to board the bus they just drove on by. Now I see them stop and wait for the kids to exit the house and walk (none ever run) that far while the bus sits and idles burning up diesel and holding up any traffic. I never see kids standing beside the road waiting for the bus. Today's kids have such a tough life. Surely they shouldn't have to deal with riding a bus in the dark.

O&S:
Yeah my mother and aunt walked many miles to and from school, first in Nebraska where winter were shorter, then fifty miles South of where I am, where two weeks of contiuous sub-zero weather was expected.
You come up here and stay out in the boonies for the whole month of winter where you have to shovel snow get any where, and stand outside, one-quater miles from the house on a dirt road for at least one-half hour five days , every week for four weeks.

After you do that then you can say how easy it is.
Those down south know absolutely nothing about what 3 months of a truly hard winter is, this is Minnesota:

Since 1873, the temperature in the Twin Cities has remained at or below zero for at least four consecutive days a total of 28 times, with the most recent occurrence being a four-day stretch ending February 15, 2021. There was a five-day stretch ending January 18th, 1994. The longest such streak on record was seven days, from January 1-7, 1912.

Poor kiddies having to endure traveling in the dark. Too bad you can't just get your sun to shine longer so the kids won't have to deal with the dark. Oh, well man has been dealing with the dark since he stood up and started walking around and apparently the kids have managed to make it pretty well as we have overpopulated the world.

PS: my mother traveled 11 miles one way to a school on the south plains of Texas. She did have the luxury of doing it in a horse drawn hack which she described as something kind of like a buggy. No heater like today's school buses of course, just quilts and blankets to stay warm. She wound up with frost bit feet one winter. Yeah, it get cold down here too and everyone can come up with a sob story.

My mother and aunt rode a horse to school, in good weather when they were still down in Amhearst , Neb., a bump in the rode in the middle of Nebraska, and for a bit when they went to country school after moving to Minnesota, so what you tell me is nothing new. (My aunt used to ride a horse in parades when she go older with those fancy Roy Rodger type stirrups.)

Now that record I copied is from the Twin Cities, now a heat sink, i.e. always warmer than surrounding country, especially than upstate 70 miles North where I am in now.
The Twin Cities have never had -40 in my life time, we have had it where I am now several times in the past 30 years, -30 is a bitch, -40 is a bitches mother.
Way up North, where the sun sets 25 minutes earlier than where I am now and you think the children should get used to it, -50 is not uncommon.

Until you have spent at least one day walking  two miles in -50 degree weather, which I had to do one day when I was in school up there, you have ZERO idea of what a true hard winter is.
It can kill quickly , and has in the past.

Trying to find information about Mn weather that is not based on the heat sink Twin Cities is pathetically hard but here some thing from the DNR.
