45-70 in a 45-90??
« on: March 14, 2004, 11:21:05 AM »
can one load a 45-70 with the bullet seated shallow enough for the tip of the bullet to touch the lands on a 45-90 rifle and it shoot with any accuracy?
i dont have a 45-90 but i got a pard who is thinking abt getting one and wants to know if he can use his 45-70 brass to shoot in the 45-90??
he was thinking along the lines of shooting 38's in a 357 or a 44 special in a 44magnum.
i told him i would post this question here to satisfy him.
yall let me know so i can let him know.
thanks,
sureshot
p.s. if he loaded the 45-70 and seated the bullet to the proper depth there would be to big of a gap for the bullet to jump accross before hitting the riflings in the barrel right??

It can be done, but I would not recomend it.  His thinking of 38 Spl to .357 mag comes to mind.  When this is done the shorter cartridge rings the chamber, and if done over a long period of time will ruin the chamber.  I can think of other reasons as well such as leading from bullet jump.

It would be best for your friend to just buy some 45-90 brass and do it right.
