Those dang birds wake me up every morning with that horrible call of theirs.  Come to think of it - it does kinda sound like a crow.

I involve myself in all types of hunting, including hunting game near feeders and I consider myself a "real hunter."

a ''real hunter'' would not shoot a protected bird.

I didn't say that I did.   Besides, I was responding to your comment about hunting under feeders.  Don't compare apples with oranges.

Virtually all of the feeders with which I have hunted use corn.

My experience with feeders has varied.  Some people believe that with feeders, all deer, including trophys, simply walk under the feeders and wait for you to shoot them.  While this can be true to some degree, in my experience is accounts for less than 50% of the truth.

I say this because, at least to me, feeders are used to attract deer to an AREA, not just necessarily under the feeder itself.  This is especially important during the rut because the does go to the feeders and the bucks follow the does.  Granted, bucks can, and often do, eat along with the does under the feeder, but during the rut the bucks are more interested in mating than eating.  Under these circumstances, they usually hang out around the area and wait for the does to come back.  It is at this point that I too like to rattle the bucks out of their hotspots where they are waiting for the does.

More importantly, there are often times of drought when the deer simply have no available food sources.  As such, feeders are usually the only source they have.  In fact, you can usually see them so thin and unhealthy that it looks like their rib cages are about to stick out.   During these times, the bucks will come in under the feeders, but I shoot does so that, as part of management, as there are less animals to feed, the ones left over will have more food to eat, and thus become healthier.

I thot Blue Jays wuz only protected in Toronto?!

Happily, there aren't any of those winged rats here in the west, but we have the black-and-white version, magpies. Not as noisy as their eastern cousins.

Interesting discussion on Blue Jays!!!
I used to own a Pecan Orchard and Blue Jays
will destroy a crop in a very brief period of time!
There are laws that allow elimination of animals that
are destructive to crops so the Blue Jay Certainly
Qualifies there.

I didn't think you were alowed to shoot any type of tweety bird... or that is how I was brought up. Are there certian "non-game" birds like robins or something that it is o.k. to hunt? This is an interesting topic. When I was younger, I knew other boys that would blast away at any bird that moved and use them as bait in traps... but even using them didn't make it legal... did it?
Cheers,

Almost all states..
« Reply #13 on: February 14, 2003, 07:34:45 AM »
In almost all states that unless an animal is listed in the hunting regulations it is illegal to shoot them no matter what the conditions unless you are a farmer or other person so engaged that you are protecting a crop or harvestable product and do so within the guidlines to the state regulations, or self defense as in Alaska.

Flordia, New York, Alaska all state such.

Yes as a kid I blasted anything too. But legally I was wrong! And in these times when everyone carefully watches the ethics of everyone else,  we, as law abiding citizens, promoting ethics is not such a bad idea.

Hey guys...S.Summer is right!  They are beautiful birds but...

A Blue Jay (Scrub Jay out West) will fly into a nut tree and knock two or three nuts to the ground in the process. It will sit in the tree and eat one or two and when it is finished, it will take a nut away and knock two or three more to the ground on the way out.  They out number ants in California.

I've seen it...they are worse than ground squirrels when it comes to stripping nut trees of their fruit.  I promise you, almond farmers will keep a 16yr. old kid in .22 shells for an entire summer, just to chase these birds out of an orchard.  There not easy to take out either.  You really have to put the Indian on them...there smart!  Way smarter than Magpies...and tougher on the crops.

Anyway, these birds will be here long after we leave this earth!

Be Safe!   ...Chris   :D

...WOW, did this discussion come a long way from the original post or what?

in nc you can kill a blue jay if it is in the act of destroying your  property.....that includes pecans, peaces etc.......i dont know about other states but most farmers in nc consider them pest............when i was young a farmer up the road used to give a bounty on them......1 dollar shot with a pellet gun and 50 cents shot with a shot gun...........also to you bird lovers out there a blue jay will kill every baby bird they can!!!!!and eat them too........

Chris,

I agree with you whole heartily BUT they are listed as song birds here in California.  Yeah their "craw" is not what I would call a song.  Unless you're a farmer or a rancher you can get into trouble killing them.  Now that's said I bust everyone that I find on my property.  Them and woodpeckers are two of the most destructive birds going.  They're a plague here in California and should have a bounty on their heads NOT the title of "song bird".  Lawdog

I know that nasty "caw" but they also have a very melodic, metallic sound which is so different it seems like a another bird.
