Rem. 700 ADL front sight removal?
« on: March 15, 2004, 07:46:03 AM »
I'm trying to remove the front sight from a Remington 700 ADL.  I think there are 2 screws that hold the ramp on.  1 is easy to get to and remove.  The second is under the sight, which from what it looks like, I have to slide the front sight out of the ramp to remove the screw.  I can't seem to get the sight to budge.

Is there a trick I'm missing to remove the sight.  I've tried sliding the sight out with the first screw in and out but can't get the sight to move out of the ramp.  I've tried covering the sight with a rag and pushing it hard with a screwdriver (pretty hard), but don't want to bend it or break it.  I've tried to wiggle it with rubber covered pliers but it didn't move.  I've oiled the grove in the ramp that the sight sits in, but still no luck.

If anyone has any pointers for me I'd greatly appreciate them.

Thanks,
JCM

You're right!  There is another screw under the sight!

If it's that tight, I'd take it to a gunshop and ask them to remove it for me!  The cost shouldn't be over $5.00 or so, and who knows, if they're not real busy (or you buy something there) there may not be a charge!  Either way, you'll have it out, without screwing anything up!
Good luck;

The ramp must be supported and the sight pressed out of it's dovetail from left to right.  A smith should have a tool for this purpose..  One can do it himself but care must be taken to avoid damaging the ramp or the screws that retain it.

You can use a brass punch to do the job, but a regular front sight remover that can be had at Brownell's is best.  If you aren't going to be doing this for a few guns, it might be well to follow the advice already given and have a 'smith do it for you.  You are right in being carefull not to strip the screw holding the ramp, and those Rem. front sights will break right under the bead if you let the punch slip.
