Picked up new 7600 in 35 Whelen ammo questions
« on: March 16, 2004, 08:20:29 AM »
Well it took me almost three months but I finished paying off my 7600 in 35 Whelen that I had on layaway. Now I have both the 35 Remington carbine and the 35 Whelen rifle that Grices did the special run on. What ammo recommendation does anyone have. I do not reload. I know that Remington has 200 and 250 grain and Federal has 225 grain. Any feed back. MIKE.

I have had good luck shooting the 200's and 250's out of my 35 Whelen's. My 700 BDL likes the 250's and my 7600 likes the 200's. I have never tried the Federal 225's.

My 7600 shoots the 200 grn Rem better than the 250's. I have never shot the federals. I reload and my favorite load is one with a 225 grn. sierra. Have you thought about reloading? You would have more choices especially with these 2 calibers. Good luck.

I also have a lot of fun with 158 gr pistol bullets for plinkers.  I DO NOT LIKE 250 Hornady Roundnose.  I first tried them with light loads and they were key-holing at 100 yds, tried them again with hotter loads and they stopped keyholing, but would not group. I am looking into a heavier bullet that has more bearing surface than the Hornady.  The Speer 250 soft-points look good, but I havent tried them yet.  If I don't find anything better, I will stick with the Remington bulk Corelokts, they are awesome bullets.  This cartridge is fairly new to me also, I have all summer to get it dialed-in for my first hunt.
....make it count

Thanks for the replys. I wanted to go with the 250's just because I like big bullets but I will order all three and give them a test.

Reloading is just not possible for me at this time. I can shoot or reload not both. I am a skeet shooter who shoots twice a week. My work load does not allow any other time right now.

What do you guys recommend for a scope on the Whelen. I had a 4 X 12 in mind. Do you think that would be too large or powerful? MIKE.

Most of my rifles were a Leupold Vari x II 1-4-20. Most people don't like these low power scopes, but for the areas we hunt, I have never felt limited. The low power works great in the brush and 4x is just fine for open shooting. Most of the time my scope never leaves 1x.

I'm with 257. I have a Leupy 1.5X5 on my 35whelen (7600). I love it and dont feel hindered by the low mag.

Low power scopes

ditto on the last two posts. I have a 1.5 X 6 B & L 3000 on my 30-06 model 74 and love the low power settings. Had a 4 X 12 on a bolt gun and was always pushing the power up to look at stuff and then have game walk/run into the area and had a hard time finding them in the scope. Unless you are hunting bean fields or powerlines the lower magnifications will be just the ticket.
