how about :   17rem
260rem /26inch barrel (might have too much perisher)
303 brit (should work well in a handi with the rim)
                    338/06
                    35 whelen
                    375 win
                    444 marlin
                    7mm mauser
                    6.5 swed/26inch barrel

and how about making some of the one's they have a bit better? like:

243/26" bull barrel
280/26" bull barrel
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

Mitchell, the 260rem appears to be a proprietary name for 6.5mm-08, so that should work fine. 444 and 7mm Mauser were discontinued in the last couple of years, but you can still get 450, 45/70, and 7mm-08.

My 280/26" seems heavy enough to me. Did you end up getting the 280 or the 30-06 for deer hunting on that crop damage permit?

Mitch.

thats right i forgot about that . well then whats taking them so long ? do know how hot of a seller the 260 would be?

dad was footing the bill so i got the 06 like he wanted. i wanted the 280 but the 30-06 did the trick , every deer shot fell in its tracks from 15-215 yards . it really made a believer out of me with the hornady sst-ib bullets, i shot one doe at just under 200 yards she was facing straight at me . i  hit her in the chest and it went all the way though and came out the right hind quarter . messed up a lot of meat though but its still a great bullet i only recovered one in 10 deer.

oh and about the being heavy. nahh my 223 is 12# and it don't bother me to lug it around. heavier=steadier and i would use them more as a target/stand gun more then a walking gun (i got the 6# 30-06 for that)
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

For all those guys that listed either the WSSM, WSM or Magnum catridges, it's unlikely to happen. The chamber pressure is too great for the receiver and the reason that the company pulled H&R Talk off its website was because too many guys were talking about having their barrels re-chambered to magnums on the company endorsed website, something the NEF/H&R break open action isn't designed to stand up to & was likely to cause them legal problems down the track. So leave those in dream land.  :(

Personally, I'd like to see he return of the 35 Whelen and the addition of these rounds:
 - 7x57
 - 6.5x55
 - 357 Mag
I'd also like to see a return of the Mannlicher stocks that were an option on the H&R rifles during the 70's. I'd love a Handirifle in .35 Whelen with a 22" barrel & a Mannlicher stock. For that matter any of the above or the existing cartridges(the "26 barrels included) would look great. Sorry I'm a sucker for this look

Sorry, for got one more thing. I'm an Aussie and we aren't even open to the barrel exchange program. Geez, I can't even order a rifle with more than one barrel when I get it straight from the factory, let alone send one back to get another barrel.

I'd like to see the program extend to overseas residents or at least those people be able to order more than barrel when they order a rifle through their importer.

PLEASE CHANGE THIS, H&R!!!!!!  :?

So what I'm seeing here is just about every cartridge know to man. I don't have a problem with that.

7x57 and 7x64 were discontinued more than a year ago. I imagine that Marlin feels 7-08 and .280 are sufficient substitutes.

After 8 years, it should be time for another run of .35 Whelen.

357 was discontinued this year.
I would imagine they noticed how fast we went through their stockpile of .357 replacement barrels.

The Mannlicher forestocks were still available for something like $30US last I knew.

Chamberings I'd like?

6.5x55 SE  or .260 Remington.  Don't need both, just one or the other.
7.62x39 Russian
.303 British
9mm Luger (18" barrel)
.35 Whelen (it's been here before but lets reintroduce)
.257 Roberts

That's pretty much in order of preferance.

Funny, I sent in my NEF survey a couple of months ago ranting about a .257 Roberts.  It's good to see some others have the same desire.  My list:

.257 Roberts
6.5x55 Swede
Wooden thumbhole stock

ohh, I really like the idea for a wooden thimbhole stock. I'd also like to see a few more chamberings offered in 26" barrels.

Of course a 41Mag w/  Ballard rifling, also a barrel in 7.62X39 would be nice with a 310 dia. bore.
But what would be nice is have them chamber a barrel in the 225 Winchester. Now that would be a reloaders dream for me.
Just my thoughts

All I want is a factory authorized gunsmith with a supply of unchambered barrels in the bores that NEF already makes.

You know Guys...

I think it's time we go about finding a qualified gunsmith as DJ has said...but one who's credentials can be easily traced...one who can provide complete references and possible proof of their work...who will provide us with quality work...at a resonable rate...and who wouldn't be afraid or object to becoming a sponser or contributor here on GBO.....that way we could feel safe in sending our barrels/rifles to him/her and have a forum where we can discuss the merits of our wants or wishes to these fine little rifles....this would be a very good for his buisness and good for us to be able to come here and discuss prices...feesabilities...and problems.... also a place where his work can be critiqed and any praises could be bestowed upon him...

Now...I'm not talking about someone who only works in wildcat conversions or barrel stubbing and such...nor am I talking about someone who has a fancy web site and promises the moon...but only works out of his garage with limited supplies and parts and with out the proper tools a qualified smith would have....nor am I talking about someone who would try to convert one of the rifles into something they were never designed for like a Magnum cartridge...but a person who has a full working knowledge of these rifles and understands all of the pressure limitations these action have....

This would be a place where anymember here could freely travel to if they wished and see for themselves just who and where they would be sending their rifles/shotguns and money to....

I've talked to a few smiths about this possibility...a few seemed interested but some weren't..namely because of the time involved with taking on a project like this...but with as much buisness as this forum could generate...would seem to me to be a valid reason why a buisnessman would want to take it on......

My search continues........

7.62X39 Russian.  Good ballistics, plentiful, cheap to shoot, especially if you buy the Russian (Wolf) ammo.  I like the round for varmints and short range deer shots.

Sure, I'd like to see a 6.5x55 Swede.

But the .223 to .270 realm is one of the most in-depth already for the Handi (.223, .243, 25.06, .270...).

6mm, .260, 6.5x55 all are great shooters.

What I REALLY wish for in a Handi is a big game .30+ caliber in a RIMMED for reliability new round based on something like 9.3x74mm Rimmed Brass. Elmer Keith did a bunch of experiments around this configuration.

A rimmed case, 200+ grain .30+ diameter at 2700-2800 fps and reasonable pressures.

THUUUUMP!

Call it the .30 H&R...  or .35 H&R!!!!!

*sigh*
