Good black powder enthusiast's movie

I realize this is a bit late, but I did a search and found no comments about Master and Commander.

Am I the only one who's seen it?  If not everyone on this board should.

Extremely well done movie!  I plan on buying the DVD or video as soon as I can get my hands on it.

I've been seeking out every pirate movie and high seas movie I could because I've just had a good hankerin' for some good filming on cannon battles and sailing ships.  So far NONE of the movies I watched ever satisfy the itch.

But Master and Commander did.  It was awesome.

And just an all around decent movie.  I went to see it with my Dad and there were no seens that would made me embarrassed.  They even said the "Our Father" on screen, en toto.

It would be one of those that you could see over and over again because the British accent is so thick at times you miss some good one-liners.  There's also a lot of fast-action battle scenes that are easy to get lost in.

I saw Master and Commander when it first came out. I, too, thought it was a great movie, and I'm hoping they do a sequel. The ending certainly set the stage for one. I noticed that it won best picture in England this month. As to 18th century sea adventures, have you ever seen the 1960s Robert Stack movie "John Paul Jones"? It still ranks among my favorites after all this time.

"John Paul Jones"?  No I haven't seen it.  I've seen some older seafaring movies and it just seemed like they could use some 21st century help with the special effects.

It seems like all the good effects have gone into futuristic movies like Star Wars, or WWII flicks - I was just waiting for someone to apply modern technology to a good hull-splintering 1800's sea battle.

Unfortunately this movie doesn't do what the books do - and that's explain the seafaring terms and culture to the uninitiated.  In all the books, the character Stephen Maturin is a "land lubber" who is involved in a lot of dialogue.  I suspect this is a technique used by the author to explain all the various naval terms.  Just when the reader's head is spinning with all the jargon, Capt. Jack Aubrey kindly explains it all to Stephen.

It would be nice to see a series of movies like "Star Wars" come out with this.  Maybe some toy flintlocks, mini-action figures, toy boats and cannons.  Ooooh my wallet is starting to throb.

Actually if you want that kind of stuff for kids I recommend looking into Playmobile products.

Haven't seen, "Master And Commander", as yet...  I plan on it when it comes out on tape...  I was watching them interview the main character one night on TV and it sounded to me like they were going to make a series of three movies about, "Master And Commander"...  Sounds good...
