You should be, at the least, able to get promising groups with R-7 in your 45-70. In fact, it should give at least one really good group. It would be helpful to know the powder charges you have tried and which bullet(s) you have tried as well. I am working with cast bullets in my 45-70, and different powders, but R-7, 3031 or 4198 should give you something that is more than satisfactory. All 3 will duplicate factory velocities. Not criticizing your shooting or shooting techniques, but the Handis are notorious for needing to be held/rested behind the forearm screw, be sure not to over tighten that screw, and 45-70 recoil can be punishing, be sure to not shoot more at a sitting than you re comfortable with. 30 rounds of bullets weighing 330-405 grains at 1300-1400 fps is about my personal limit. After that I begin to lose my concentration. I won't bench shoot 1800 fps 300 grainers at all.

Gee thanks JPH45, it's reassuring to see that someone else "appreciates" the recoil of factory 45/70 loads. Woodbutcher

jph45,i'm using remington 300 grain,semi-jacketed h.p's. rem. brass, winchester large rifle magnum primers, 2.550 oal. started out with 38.0 grains of reloader 7. i've went up from there, all the way to the max load listed of 45.0 grains. i just feel like i'm missing something on this, somehow. i know its not the gun, with factory rem. ammo, at 100 yds, 1.5 inch to 2.0 inch groups.  i always put the sand bag behind the forearm screw, take my time shooting. let the gun cool between shots. thanks for suggestions....flaco

Hi flaco & all -

I get 1 moa groups with the Rem 300 gr and 45.5 gr/3031.
Average velocity "backed up" from instrumental is 1565 fps.
This is in a 28" "Shikari" so'd be some less in a 22"er.
Recoil in mine is ~18 fp.
In yours, assuming 1400-1450 fps & 8# ('scoped) it'd be ~15-16 fp.
Have loaded to ~2150 fps @ ~34K CUP.
These guns are stronger than the Marlins which are good to 40+K CUP, if your shoulder is!

Just now working on Rem300/RL-7 for a Marlin 1895CB .45-70.
I'll let you know what happens if you wish.

regards,
I won't intentionally shoot your sacred cow.
