if I had to pick and if I could keep the shot out of bone, I'd say the soft point. The V-max and A-max with ruin one if you hit on a bone. The hollow point would be my second choice. If you reload or know of anyone that reloads the 223, try the 223 Reduced Loads using Blue Dot powder. These are dandy little loads when it comes to bobcats and fox. Haven't tried one out ona coyote as of yet, but I'm sure with the right bullet and placement, they'd do good.

If yur hide huntin, stick with FMJ in the 223.  If you use a 22-250 or a 220 Swift, the lighter V-Max over 4000 fps will enter but not exit within reasonable ranges.

Woody, my remington prefers the 50gr. BT over a heapin helpin of varget but, on occasion they will exit rather violently.  I have never had the 40gr. BT exit, but have had them not make 1 shot kills when I felt they should have, due to their fragile design.  Since I don't want the hides the Sierra 52gr.BTHP Match is my old standby but I'm learning these little red tips better all the time.

The 55gr. FMJ will enter and exit with about the same size hole on each side as long as no major bone is encountered.

Around here, coyotes are nothing but a lot of trouble.  They've killed cats, pups, and even a calf or two for one of the neighbors.

I'd stick with the fmj in the 223. You may have one run off once in a while but at least the ones you down will be worth skinning.

That's all fine and good, but check your state's hunting regulations before you try the FMJs.  Many states do not allow them for hunting, even coyotes.  I shoot a .223 and have had pretty good luck with 50 grain V-maxes on top of a near-max charge of Varget.  The only time I get ugly hides is on fringe hits.  Center them and I don't have much trouble.  In fact, I shot real nice male yesterday at about 70 yards right on the shoulder and I couldn't find the entrance wound.  Just a nice jiggly jello sound when I picked him up.  The 40 grainers were often ugly though, hence the switch to 50s.  In a 250, I've seen soft points blow a coyote nearly in half, even on classic head on or broadside shots.  The more fragile poly tipped bullets will usually not exit on those shots, particularly at the high velocities of the 250.

In my 22-250 I shoot v-max bullets. I've recovered every thing I've hit with them. I shot a big boar coon with them last year, small entrance and no exit hole. Droped many a coyote with them. In my .223 encore the Winchester 45grn hp works great but makes a big hole in a coyote with a shoulder shot. Used to shoot a 220 swift but got tired of sewing up big holes in my fur. Hit my first grey fox with the 220 and it made me sick. Was to embarased to take a picture with it, looked like I hit it with a chain saw.

I have found two bullet types that work well for me.  I harldy ever get an exit hole.  Speer 52 grain hollow point (not match)  and the 50 grain TNT.  They will spread a praire dog over about 3 zip codes too.  Like someone before me mentioned try to stay away from hitting a bone.

I also have real good luck with the Speer 50 TNT in my 223's on coyotes.   No exit holes and it drops them like a rock.   Both my XP-100 and Remington 78 Sportsman prefer this bullet over all the rest in the precision department too (so does the 700VS, but with a 2 ounce trigger, its a bench digger doer only).   A Texas pard really likes the Dogtown 50's he gets from Midway for coyotes, and he shoots a lot of them down there.

I use 40gr Barnes hp with 39gr of AA 2520 in a Savage 110 22-250, they do about 4200fps.  With my rifle/scope setup they are an inch high at 100 yards and dead on at 200, so basically you do not need to change anything from 0 to 250 yards, sort of like shooting a laser.  I don't use the soft points because it stresses me out to see all the dinged and bent up points on the bullets, I hear it doesn't matter, but it still bothers me.  I tried some 30gr Bergers but they are just too light.  The Barnes will group an honest inch and half at 200 yards.  Larry

I would go with the 40 VMax it's the only thing I will use in my 220 swift I will get a few exits that are messy but most of the time they go in and stay in  I would think that the 223 would have about the same results skinner
