1995 S-10 clutch question
« on: March 20, 2004, 03:37:17 AM »
Just had the clutch and slave cylinder replaced in my '95 S-10 (V6) after 92,000 miles.  Works fine except after about an hour of city stop and go traffic the pedal gets hard and it "chatters" when starting from a dead stop.  Going uphill is a bear.  Have to get it up to 3000 rpm and very very slowly release the clutch to move forward.  No way is that normal.  I compare it to the feel of a semi or farm tractor clutch.  Anybody know what's up?  It's back at the shop now, after @ 1200 miles!  Thanks

HogSniper2 I have a couple questions. Why did you replace it to start with. Did you go aftermarket or did youn stick with original equipment parts. There is a difference between General Motors clutch and pressure plates and the aftermarkets. Their will be some that disagree but I've been in the business long enough to know. The chatter noise usually indicates the throwout bearing make noise. Sounds to me like you got some bad parts. Just my 2 cents.

When I was young and dumb, I put in a new clutch but didnt bother having the flywheel machined and wound up with a bad case of chatter. Needless to say I had to pull it all apart and have the flywheel turned

1995 S-10 clutch question

BIGBOREFAN, the clutch was slipping bad (92,000) and was getting hard to put in reverse without grinding.  Called the GM dealer and they wanted $1200-1500 for a replacement.  Called two other shops.  The one I picked charged $700.  They tried to fit three different clutches/pressure plates.  Housing bolts wouldn't align, etc.  It is an aftermarket and after 1200 miles the problems began.  Two mechanics were able to duplicate the problem, but didn't know why.  It's been at the shop three days.  My S-10 is like a rock.  It still has the factory brakes (93,000 miles).  This is the first major mechanical problem.

UPDATE:  Picked it up three days later. Well I tried. I started the truck and when I went to take it out of neutral I noticed the gear shift was entirely to stiff/hard to move. Went throught the 'H' pattern, had a friend try and he even said it felt to hard. Walked back and returned the key. #@&*$%.! Returned three hours later (the shop never called) and it was fixed. Afterwards one of the mechanics even said it was to stiff. Why didn't the installer notice? HELLO! So, with my other "NEW" clutch I drove away. No one really knew why the other was defective. What ever happened to quality control?
