Post Office Colt S.A.A. Revolvers?
« on: March 20, 2004, 06:01:48 PM »
What ever happened to all of the single action Army Colt Revolvers that Postal employees carried  back in the thirties and forties? When  I was a youngster I used to wait for the mailman to pick up the mail from the street  mailbox just to see that big hogleg strapped to his hip Never heard of them being offered for sale. ???????? Horsefeathers.

 I never saw an armed mailman!  But then, I only remember back to the early 50's.   Was that regulation, with an issued weapon, or did you just live in a tough neighborhood?

I was an armed mailman in the 60's.  We didn't get the revolvers then.  I was issued a 1911 stamped U.S. Postal Service.  The carriers that had blank money orders with them or registered mail were required to be armed on route.  I believe these guns are still held in reserve as the Post Office is heavy on tradition and doesn't like to give anything up.  Maybe the hog legs will be offered to the public one day.......................

Once upon a time in a book I saw a S&W .22 revolver that the Postal Service had evaluated.  The purpose was to arm carriers so they could shoot hostile dogs!

That would go over well today.....
