Need opinions on 28 gauge barrel
« on: March 21, 2004, 01:40:29 PM »
Hey guys, I havent been on in a long time, but i plan on getting on much more now. Anyway, I plan on getting a 28 gauge barrel on my Huntsman frame. When i send in my forearm, they send back a new one instead of my huntsman one, right? And how does this little gun shoot? I know ammo is hard to get, but my buddy has an ffl and orders all kinds of ammo and guns online, so thats not a problem. I was hoping to use it for skeet shooting, rabbits, and ruffed grouse. Any feedback would be nice.

Thanks

id get a 20...nothing you cant do with it, and no appreciable diff. in felt recoil....
except for competetive skeet shooting , the 28 is an obsolete chambering.
id avoid it like the plague.

just my .02....

I have a Topper in 28 and its a great little gun to shoot.  I've haven't had it to the skeet range. But I did use in a couple of times dove hunting.  Also used it rabbit hunting it held its own against the 12's and 20's.
The ammo everyone says is so hard to find...  Well your not going to find any at the local wally's world.  But I have two local gun shops that have a pretty good supply.  The shot selection is a little limited but I only use
7 1/2 for dove and 6  for rabbit.  And for 38.00 bucks how can you go wrong with a new barrel ?  And by the way I also own a 16 ga.  Actually I have every standard gauge shotgun .410 to 10 ga.

28 gauge is a great bird gun, and it isn't obsolete. any gun store has 28 gauge shells and for $100 you can buy a MEC Jr and reload all your empties. don't use wally world or the local drug store as barometer for shell popularity or effectiveness, they only sell what the masses buy.

i use 28's on all upland birds from pheasant to quail and like it almost as much as my 410 ! in my opinion, 28 is the best all-around bird round, no recoil to speak of, easy to relaod, and 3/4 to 7/8" oz of #7 1/2 or #8 shot will do fine for any bird. get the 28 gauge, you have no regrets !!!

I love my 28 gauge!  It's my main field gun.  It doesn't tear up the birds and over the dog I rarely feel under gunned.
