Please help with a scope for a 22-250
« on: January 05, 2003, 01:13:16 PM »
I recently purchased a 22-250, no real purpose just to shoot and maybe a little hunting..But was curious on what scope and power to put on it. I have only deer rifles and all have 3-9, except a 3-12 on my STW, and was thinking a litle more power, maybe up to 15, 18 or even 20..I have 2 B&L, a nikon and a Kahles, and am pleased with all, especially the B&L and Nikon or the money, but was curious about other brands, Weaver, Burris or anything else anyone couls suggest..I would lke to stay around or under 300 maybe $350..thank you

a lot depends on exactly what yhou are going to be using it for I have two one has a 3x9 and the other has a 4x12 and I can probably count on my hands how many times I have actually made a hunting shot with it up near the 12 power mark, mostly I am using in the 6 to 8 power range when I am shooting it here at targets I do crank them up but I also use a spotting scope to help also so I guess I am just cheeting a little, :D   JIM

I'd look at the 4x-16x power range, especially if your hunting will involve varmints, etc. (which the .22-250 is famous for.)

Take a look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 in 5x-15x-40mm.  It is well under $350.  If you want to spend a little more money, take a look at the Nikon Monarch 4x-12x-44mm.  This too should be just in your price range.

The jist I got from your post,  is that you intend to do some medium range paper punching,  and some small game/varmints.  Opinons, opinions,  opinions.......and here is mine.   For that kind of shooting,  I have 4-16x44  Burris Signature on a Remington  VSSF.  It gives me a low end close to the 3x9.  The high end gives me the medium range power for the 300 yrd.  or closer shots.  I seldom use the rifle beyond that range.  For longer ranges, 400 yrds. +,   I use a Bushnell 6-24 Elite 4200 on a Kimber 22-250,  and a Howa 1500 Varmint in 22-250.  Both have excellent glass.  The Bushnell is clearer for me at the higher powers.

Burris Fullfield ll (some Signature models) and the Bushnell Elite are   about in your price range.  A good cartridge and rifle deserve decent optics.  If just a difference in a very few dollars keep you from the scope you want,  save the extra nickels.  There are a lot of choices out there.  The above are mine.
