Hunting Hogs at Night
« on: March 22, 2004, 07:02:55 AM »
Looking for some advise on a good way to hunt hogs at night. The hogs are coming into my feeders, as best as I can tell, between 10 pm and 2 am. Tha problem is I normaly hunt alone, I need a way to light up the hogs and shoot at same time. I have seen those lights that attach to the barrel of the gun, but with brush and stuff this does not seem to be the best way to me. Have any of you tried sitting a flood light up on a stand of some type and then turn it on when the hogs come in? Would you use a red lense cover or just white light? I'm open to suggestions. How would you do it? I was thinking maybe a spotlight attached to a tripod and rig up a remote switch so I can set it may 10 or 12 yards away. Thanks for any suggestions.

A fella I hunted with in Texas used those clamp on lights with a real low wattage bulb.  He'd clip it to the brush or tree above the feeder to create an artificial moon.  It seemed to work pretty well.  The trick was getting it just bright enough to see by without spooking the hogs.  He said it took a while for them to get used to it, but once they did they were yours.  I like feeders positioned a little more in the open so the natural moonlight does the work.  I can usually see well enough to shoot when the moon is about half or better.  I generally schedule my once per year hunt several months in advance, so I have the luxury of hunting the full moon.

the thickness of your wallet is the only restriction on how you light up your hogs, but one simple method that seems to work very well for a majority of hunters would be to use the varmint lights that mount right on your scope.  If your hogs are hard pressured you'll need a red lense, if they're naive a plain o'l white light will work just fine.

If you want to thank me just send a box of ribs, and chops.

glad to help anytime.

If you can afford it, get a night vision scope and mount to your rifle.  Makes all the difference when hunting any type of varmint at night including hogs.

howie1968, I tried to PM you twice but I keep getting "invalid session", don't know what that is. Anyway I tried an old taillight lens on my spotlight then mounted the light to a tripod. A hog came in just as it was getting good and dark, I could see his outline good, but I didn't have a good shot form where I was at. I waited til he moved over some, about 15 minute and it was getting pretty dark, then I switched on the spotlight. The taillight lens difussed the light too much and I couldn't see good enough with my red dot scope to get a shot. I tried using my head light but from where I was at it was not strong enough to see with, about 40 yards. The hog didn't like the white light and left at that point, but didn't seem in any real big hurry. I have come up with a regular red lens cover and I will try that tonight. My spot light is 2 million CP so it shoud be enough with a regular lens cover.
Thanks for ya'lls reponses, a good 3rd gen scope is a little out of my price range right now, but maybe some day. I thank the night blaster light may be my best bet right now. Howie, if you could e- mail me some info I would be gratful. Any more suggestions would be great.

you can get those nite blaste lights out of cabela's if you have copy of their hunting catalog.  Iwas wondering about those lights, myself.  Howie, if you read this post, is the light mounted on your .45-70?  Is it easy to take on/off your scope, if you need to, in a hurry?

yes   it  is  mounted  to  my  45-70  and   you  do  not  need  any  tools   it  just  snaps   to  your   rifle   it  comes  with  a charger   power  cord   velcro carring  case  i  love  them  i  should  clarify  it  snaps  on  top  of  your  scope   it  has  adjustments   to  align your scope  with the  beam  on  the  250  and 350  yard  models    with  the 100 compactr  you  do  not  need  these  adjustments  i  would  buy  extra  6  volts 4,5  amp  hr  rechargeable  batteries  as   they  will  only  run  30  min  continiously   but   they  will  switch  on  and  off  hundreds  of  time   i  hunt  with  my  ears  so  when  i  hear the  crunching  that  is  when  i  hit  the  switch   you  can  get  the  extra  6  volts  from  any  feed store   or  academy  for  around  8.00 wal-mart  carries  thenm  sometimes   through  optronics  you  will  pay 19.00   for the  same  thing

The Night Blaster is awesome.  The 6 hogs I shot on the S. Texas hunt were killed using the Night Blaster.  All one shot kills.

buy a 5 pound sack of flower and dust it heavy around your feeders. the hogs contrast on this if there is the slightest bit of light. the flour is also something that helps to attrach them since it is made from their food source. give it a shot and let me know.works great for us
