My New House Gun

Been looking for a clean used one for almost two years, and had given up and settled for an 870. Gun shop called yesterday and said he had one in stainless that looked new.
Went over there and it was in the box.
He asked me how I liked the Sig and I told him I missed my 686. He walked over to his safe came back and laid my old Smith on the counter, and said, he had a feeling I'd be back.
Long story shortened, I swapped straight across for my Smith back, and done some horse trading on the Coach gun and 870, and some other stuff I had.

I walked out with my old Smith, the Coach gun, and 300 bucks.

I just can't handle the 9mm concept.

I remember more than once letting a favorite gun go on a swap, and wishing I hadn't. Later one being a Savage model 24 over and under in  22 LR, over 20 ga. Perfect little firearm for around the place and Oregon Grouse gun and such. We're allowed to hunt Grouse with 22 LR as well as shotgun.

The 20 ga. serves me well, with less kick than a 12 on my tired old shoulder, and a light weight gun to pack in the woods.

LOL, you ain't gonna believe this, but Sunday we were at a family gathering and I got talked outta that 686 that I was so glad to get back. I'd been carrying it since LAST THURSDAY and after three days of carrying that 3 lb pistol the Sig was startin to look better.
SO! I let the 686 go, called the gun store to see if they still had my Sig. I went and got it today.

Going from that Sig back to the 686 was a weight/comfort shock.

Gosh, I hope I'm not losin it.

I carried a full size 45 for over 30 years. Was never cumbersome because I only carried when heading into a "bad neighborhood" These days a compact 9mm has become a daily routine.

Yeah, I carried heavy pistols for decades, but I'm in my 70s and weight now makes a difference.

I got this shotgun used, but in the box in New condition. It was very stiff and hard to open, or close. No indication in disassemblely that it had ever been fired.
I tore it completely down and slicked it up. The release lever was the worst, but now its as slick as can be. I'll likely take it with me Monday and run some rounds through it.

6 rounds, 3 problems. Seems that the automatic safety under recoil will freeze the gun from opening. I'm told the fix is to take a dremel tool and cut that feature out. 

Cut a safety feature out of a defense shotgun? That doesn't really sound like a good idea to me.

Problem solved today. Took the Stoger back, and offered a trade of it and 100 rounds of 357 mag for a brand new Remington 870 Tactical. He took it.
Then made a trade of 357 mag for 240 rounds of Gold Dot 9mm 115 gr HP Protection ammo. I then sold some bulk mixed 357 mag to a salesman and a customer who split it.
I'm way better off than I was a month ago. Happy day.

The action is slick and smooth right out of the box.

That's pretty much what I had
figured, and I imagine it's open
bore for slug use and specialized
ammo.
Most of what I've handled and
shot was of a similar configuration.
BIL has a Remington 10 and a Mossberg
590, and some of the other relatives are
similarly outfitted.  A friend used to have a
nice Ithaca police trade in and an old
97 pump before that.
The one I have left is a Mossberg 500
with a rifle sight 18 1/2 " barrel
I have a short 20" ramp sight single
that is at hand most of the time

Hard to beat a shotgun IF it's
100% reliable and have faith in it

Those Croatian peestollas are pretty good.
I've had an XD for a while now and have yet
to jam it and it's very accurate.
I got that when I had to face up to my
Colt Officer's not shooting very straight
at times especially with ammo changes.

Very well, yep. Great place, great people, tough place to live, makes for tough people ... wish I moved here sooner. You can leave everything unlocked. Folks take care of each other, share food, firewood, pick up meds at the CVS 50 miles away for you. We have grizz in town, young 8 footer is hanging out by the post office this week in fact, so I carry the 10 in a chest holster when I'm outside in the yard, or walking around town. 586 with 200gr is in the truck to put down a road struck moose. 12ga with slugs in the mud room in case a grizz gets too interested in the house. Folks are keeping tabs on the wildlife so we pretty much know where every bear, moose, wolf or lynx is. Went to Anchorage last weekend; homeless, drugs, LGBTQ, transplants from Portland, Seattle, San Fran run that city. Only place I carry concealed.

Linda and I still daydream about moving there when we were younger. My oldest son spent 3 years at Ft Wainwright and talked about living up there again.

First grizzly of the season made it over by our house this afternoon, chasing a young mama moose and a calf. He got distracted by some of my buddies working on a cabin not far from us, bluff charged them, so they holed up in the cabin until he wandered off towards our place. We've been keeping Barney, our dog, close to the house - he's a big fella, but not big enough. I had put the 12ga away for winter, so I went and got it out again, loaded it up with rifled slugs; 24" barrel inertia semi-auto. Leaning up by the door now JIC. I bought a grizz tag not so much because I plan to hunt one, but figured when they come along after I got a moose or caribou, I wouldn't say no. But if it came to it, I'd tag one in the yard and call a couple neighbors to help part it out.

12 guage slugs will stop about anything. Including a grizzly. A good choice

Teamnelson, do you use brenneke slugs? I’ve seen them to be some of the best bear medicine.
