30 years or so ago when
several of us used to go
across frequently, there was
some crime against tourists,
but mostly in the red zones.
The touristy places like the
resorts and mercados were
pretty much verboten to the
criminals, and the policia and
the soldados would make sure
the tourists spending money
were left unscathed.
I guess the cartels found the
mex law enforcement's honesty
threshold and now they're showing
their true colors. I'm now finding
that there's been more incidents
other than this particular one,
we just don't hear about it. I've
known for a very long time that
the cartel people were very brutal,
and had no compunction about
chopping a cartel enemy to tiny
bits, or burning them alive, but
they sort of kinda showed a small
amount of restraint when it came
to an honest American tourista.
The outlaws would always be
hostile towards the dope shoppers
and those frequenting the bordellos
and those crossing that were trying
to do some freelance smuggling.
