Interesting; how the drag races have evolved.
« on: April 24, 2023, 06:07:10 AM »
Many years since I spent some time at the drag races..when a buddy and I ran a Chevy.  My goodness, how they have evolved..

Apparently cubic inches displacement is no longer the king it once was..  Here a Kia Stinger 3.3 Liter challenges a Dodge Charger 5.7 liter Hemi..

And here a challenger 392 (6.4 liters), tries the Stinger..

i have a 392 and its quicker then any car i drove or street raced in the 70s. but also got schooled on turbo chargers in the 80s with the two grand nationals i had. the stock one would run with a 5.7 and my modded one was near a second quicker then my 392. those had 6 cyl turbos and today there are stock 400 hp 4 cyl turbos and some 4 cyl track cars can do 1500hp in a car that weights 1/2 what my challenger does. thing is though even those 400 hp cars are working alot harder to do it. my 392 loafs down the road with torque on demand at any speed. even off idle. i can ever so slowly ease the clutch out without touching the gas peddle in 3rd gear. ill also say driven 65-70 it will get 26 mpg and thats as good as thay 4 cyl turbo that has to be on boost to make any real power. heck the 4cyl turbo silverado puts out 310hp. ive driven them and if you didnt know better youd swear it was a v8. nieghbbor bought one a couple years ago when they first came out. he did nothing but brag on it. that is till summer came and he had to pull his 32 foot camper. which isnt a big camper. he took it in the shorts trading in on a 5.3 because nobody is buying those turbo 4's new. funny thing is he said the 4cyl got 1 maybe two mpg empty but the 5.3 gets 6 better pulling his camper. now a turbo v8 gm or mopar would make me RUN to the dealership

Besides the Motorplex, there's
not much drag racing around
( real drag racing with lights and
certified timers, etc.)
The hoodrats around here like
to do donuts at 3AM in parking
lots and tear up their transmission
and drivetrain. Used to be a couple
of 1/8 mile redneck tracks around,
but I'm not sure if they're still open.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Some thing is a amiss here, the Stinger from factory has 300hp, the 5.7 has 370hp.

Weight and 4wd may make a differnce but the first race is a scam.

maybe the difference in weight bob? i doubt its 4x4 is a big advantage. 5.7 challengers are fairly east to launch. even 6.4s aarent hard. when your talking hellcat level power 4x4 can make a big difference

And here a '61, slant-powered Lancer takes on a Hellcat.  (starts at about 26 seconds.)

And in the end, it matters not what your power-to-weight ratio is.  If your car is CONSISTENT for EVERY run, then you start, and keep, winning.

Yep.....I'm a slant 6 fan.....Roger

very cool video. thats one angry sounding slant six!! but that cat was coming for him at the end. but almost doesnt take the trophy.  guy in high school would have loved it. he had a 65 barracuda with a slant 6. he had a cam in it a split 3 into 1 header with duel exhaust and a manifold and 600 holle.it wasnt near what that car was but i saw him embarrass a few lower hp small block fords mustangs and chevs camaros
