I have recently been picking up some old rimfire rifles, and reconditioning them as needed.  I limit myself to a max of $100.

A couple years ago, I picked up a decent Winchester model 67A..  I did what refurbishing as necessary..which wasn't much..so it looks just about like the one in the link i am offering.

I consider it a bargain, even though I paid the full $100.

Positive features.. it has a 27" barrel, which is nice to have if you have "techy" neighbors (which I don't have)..when you must take out that groundhog or prairie dog.  With CCI "quiet" rounds , it can hardly be heard..but I use the CCI standards, because the quiets have too much a 'rainbow' trajectory to please me.

With that 27" barrel,  and using iron sights it also provides a longer sighting plane...

Besides, there is a certain challenge, which many share with the NEF/H&R rifle...that of a single shot.."one shot, one kill'.

Other bennies..the solid construction..no plastic..nothig but steel and walnut.  ...And of course, before 1968..no serial number.

   Here is what my model 67a looks like;

Good Old Fashioned singe shot .22s most people had them and most manufacturers made them.

Sadly 100 dollar firearms are getting rare unless they are broken or rusted wall hangers usually.

My 1st rifle was an old Steven's that looked a lot like that. Singleshots make for good shots.

It sure made us make every shot  count...no "spray & pray" there!

Another one I finished refurbishing is a Stevens 66B "Buckhorn".  It to is of course a long barrel (24").  I belie4ve those were long barrels, because it gave them a longer sighting plane , since copes were relatively rare at the time, especially on rimfires.

That Stevens is an accurate rifle..when I first got it, I put a Marble's Bullseye peep sight on it..  I took it to the local sportsmans club and found that once sighted in I could set up a clay pigeon that some shotgunner missed, and placing it at 50 yards on the measured range..i could first shoot the pigeon and then quite easily shoot the pieces one by one.

I soon lost that bullseye sight. (faulty installation, I guess..and did nothing further, until I found the original peep sight at a gun show!

It cost me $15..but that was a bargain..  Here's a picture of the Stevens 66B..   I actually think mine looks better, now..

I had bought a Favorite from an elderly
man , and a man I knew pestered me
to sell it so much that he more than
doubled my money on it,  so I let it go.
Needless to say, I never found another
one in that condition, and when Stevens
made a new edition of them they were
extremely expensive
Dang even their little plastic over and under
combo they offered a few years ago was
like $500.00 +

I have a long barreled Marlin Golden 39A made in 1959. Its probably 90% or better on the bluing, the stocks finish is likely 70%.

I have no idea how many squirrels I killed shootin CB caps out of my backyard pecan trees. The long barrel and CB caps made it quitier than a BB gun.
Its just a handy rifle to have around.

Often heard my Dad and other old timers refer to those Stevens guns as "salve guns". Apparently they were offered as prizes to kids for selling salve door to door

Oh yes !   I recall Cloverine Salve !  I never got into it , but a friend was a regular seller of Cloverine salve, and it wasn't bad stuff.

The salve was at lest the equivalent of the Watkins product, but not quite the equal of Bag Balm..  Yes, there were premiums available.

Another 22 I recently acquired, is a JC Higgins model 31.  It is a semi auto, which I understand was built for Sears by Marlin.

I got it cheap enough..my friend, who owns the local gun store, gave it to me.  It has a dorky retractable sling..(which I don't have), but I am cleaning it up anyway.
It needs a new butt plate and pistol grip cap..practically non-existant..so I asked my grandson if he had some decent wood I could use to make those parts.  I see what he has.

It does have a curious stock treatment, with a forestock that projects back past the action.

I'm not putting a great deal of work into it, since there is die cast aluminum in the action, and I am not as driven to reach for perfection in this project.  Just a decent cleanup will suffice.

Did your Win 67A have a peep sight? I remember my dad's 67a had a peep sight. My son has it now.

Although many of the 67A Winchesters had a peep sight, mine did not, but rather it had a regular, dovetail mounted, just as the photo in the link I offered.

The interesting peep sight story was with my stevens 66B.  When I got it, it had no rear sight..and my LGS friend told me that if I found the original peep sight, it would probably cost more than the rifle did.

My brother and I happened by a gun show about a month later, where I found in a dealer's "junk box' a peep sight that looked about right.  I asked the lady.."how much"?

She said $20.."fine, I'll take it"..  When she cashed me out she said $15 will be fine...  I don't flatter myself that it was my
'good looks', she may just have felt benevolent that day.

Anyway, I took it home, and it fit perfectly, only finding out by later search that it is exactly the right one.  That peep has a revolving
disc that offers 3 different size apertures..

See also, the Marbles Bullseye, like the none I once had mounted on the Stevens.  I cannot recommend it enough for an option.
I only lost it because the dovetail it was to fit into was not 3/8", and not being the gunsmith my grandson is, I did a poor job of filing
     it out..and lost the sight.

My dad's peep was also mounted in the dovetail. The only downside to his is that it's windage adjustment was pinned and so could get out of alignment really easy. I have seen other 67a's with that same sight as well.

I think that JC Higgins model 31 was made by High Standard, my aunt worked at Sears for years and my uncle had one of those.

You could very well be right.  I have searched through the web, and got both Marlin and High Standard as the source.  The bolt assy and etc. certainly do mnot compare with the Model 60 marlin..

High Standard made the one you posted a photo of. My cousin had one, bet he still has it as he isn't much at getting rid of guns.

Yeah.  Funny how that works that kids
years ago were able to work and earn
credit toward goods including firearms
that were most likely delivered to them
by mail with no background checks and
no signatures or nothing,  yet the school
shootings and mass shootings like we
see today were pretty much non existent .
Of course it's the people, but nobody will
say it , and nobody wants anyone else
to say it

When our neighbor got too old to mow his small yard, Dad volunteered me to do it for free. That fall when mowing season was over, the neighbor (with Dads permission) gave me a Mossberg .22 target rifle and a High Standard .22 pistol. I gave the target rifle to a buddies kid close to 30 years later. I still have the pistol.
