   It seems like at a million bucks worth of passengers per trip, they may have some positive means of retrieving the sub.

Well a British billionaire and a Pakistani billionaire are on that sub.  Could have been sabotaged.  Especially with Pakistan involved.

OceanGate the business, started in 2009. The first time that submarine tried to descend to the Titanic, 2017-failed Not sure how many other times, but first successful dive was 2021. Some in 2022. I'm happy just seeing some video of it. Almost like walking on hallowed ground to me.

I enjoy exploring old cemeteries and reading old tombstones, but I watch for holes. Somethings should be left alone I think. I never liked the idea of digging up the pyramids, or old dead catholic preists and nuns under glass.
I want to be cremated so that won't happen to me.

Just me-  I wouldn't be trusting my life to
an engineered something like a frail
carbon fiber and titanium coffin at the
extreme depth and pressure that those
folks were at. Yeah, it's very lightweight
and tough and all that,  but there's no
room for failure like there would be with
an all metal sub.
I would imagine the vessel folded and
crumbled in a fraction of a second like
a fresh pack of crackers.


Semi related-  I'm incredulous at all
these daredevil types seen these days
trying to paddle through extremely dangerous
river rapids, or jump off some extremely
high object with a flimsy parachute, or
perch on a dangerous tiny ledge to get
a photo or video to post online.

   Oh sure!  Especially when I read this report from THE DAILY MAIL, which was linked in the OP !

  Even if they somehow make it to the surface with a bit of air left.. they can't open up for fresh air before they run out.

  I didn't suggest that they  wouild try to open a hatch while submerged, but only after they teach the surface.. Here's the sentence;

There’s been reports of a string of failures with that thing. Seems mostly with communications. Anyone paying that kind of money for that joyride obviously has more green matter than grey. Total sympathy for their families, but we’ve heard it before…”play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.

Debris field found near the Titanic. We knew it would probably end this way. Some people can push their luck and get away with it. Others can't.

Yeah, Popeye had been pushing his luck for sometime I think. He had hired some submarine experts that had told him the carbon fiber Sub was gonna fail at some point, so he fired'em.
They're saying that the sub structure failed less than 2hours into its descent, and hit bottom about 1600 feet in front of the titanic bow.
Doubt there's much left.

Curiously, there was no direct connection with the craft..no cable no chain..nothing.  I suppose at 2.5 miles depth, they may not work, but the potential
  customer should consider that fact.

A tragic but totally preventable ending.  The endless hubris of the CEO: his insistence on not hiring “50-year-old white guys” with experience, cost-controlled building and fitting-out, apparently little to no redundancy in systems, no third-party inspections, no certifications because he believed that most accidents are caused by human error and not mechanical failures, lack of lessons learned from the aerospace industry, yadayadayada were the direct causes of this loss of life.  And we ended up paying millions of dollars to fund the search and recovery operations.  I weep for the families of the victims here, at least the latter never knew what hit them.

BTW, an umbilical line to the surface would have done nothing to prevent the tragic implosion, that was a design/inspection flaw of the craft.  One might have prevented the search operations…or not.  A wired connection to the surface is not at all standard for deep diving submersibles - the Mir subs used for filming Titanic for example are not tethered.

  No, I didn't expect that an umbilical line would have prevented the tragedy, but it may give a clue to what happened.  If an internal failure a
   two way discussion would explain.  If there was no callm or a sudden cut off during communication a catastrophic failure would be suspected.
     
   An anouncement early this PM, said the debris field is the craft..

    Greta Van Sustern just said on Newsmax, that it was a catastrophic failure, and not to expect recovery of remains (apparently for obvious reasons.)

Yeah.  They were toast right away
I am semi curious about the "tapping "
at 30 minute intervals as was reported.
Probably should be investigated.
Either somebody was negligent or
not qualified for the job,  or the instrumentation
was faulty or not up to the work it
was used for.  Stuff like that shouldn't
slide.  Gave the loved ones a false
hope, and used assets that could have
been utilized elsewhere. Not to mention
the costs. Heard on the radio that
USCG costs were over a mil.
