Primer Carriers?

I'm seriously contemplating purchasing a Huntsman Barrel for my Pardner, but had a question:  Can this gun be fired without the primer carrier?  If not, can it be modified so that it can be?  What are our opinions on the primer carrier, good idea, or a pain in the butt?  It just looks funky all bright orange and all, and it's something that needs to be replaced regularly from what I understand.  Do you like the feature?  Thanks for the input!   :-D

I have had no problem with the primer carriers. Sure beats capping tool,
etc. I have maybe 25 shots through my Huntsman.. added as a barrel to a 45/70 frame. I went this way for convenience, and continue to be
delighted with superb accuracy. Once I got the coordination down on the primer carrier, I found it to be the quickest reload. On a miserable day
last 11/16... (I mean every sq. in. of me soaked, in a driving rain) I shot
a nice 4 point. Huntsman performed flawlessly. I guess it's waterproof too! I don't spend a lot of time at the range. I will only shoot Powerbelt
.....So expensive!!!

I like the primer carrier...H&R says they are only good for a limited number of shots but I know of people who have over 50 shots on one primer carrier without a sign of wearing out.  Another positive feature of the primer carrier is that you know when the primer carrier is in the gun. The orange tab sticks out the side of the breech.  I don't think I would attempt to modify the gun so that the carrier wouldn't have to be used.  I don't know how you would go about it anyway.

Cannot be fired without the primer carrier.
I suppose that a stainless/metal plug (relative size of smaller insert portion) could be made and fastened into the breech plug, to usurp that portion of the primer carrier.
The end of the breech plug has slots on the outer rim used for removal of the BP with a supplied tool (like a screw driver),and must remain intact for removal of the plug.

I like the primer carriers.  I find them handy enough to carry,..easily obtained in possibles bag, ie: large enough to feel/find/recognize without searching with my eyes.
Color is orange and one knows that gun is primed with just a glance.
I have gotten around 100 shots per primer before the primer seems to loose it's snug fit into the breech plug/or primer fits too loosely. In either event,  blow back becomes more apparent.
That said, I'm still on the original 5 that came with the gun a year ago. :grin:

Personally I like the idea of the bright orange primer carriers.  At a glance I know if one of my students has a primed gun.  Also it's easier to handle when your hands and fingers are cold, than a primer alone.  My 15 year old son carries one and loads up several carriers with primers before going out.  He has several boxes of primer carriers that his mother gave him, still unopened.  He is still using his original five, and has shot hundreds of  times.  My friend has a Knight Disk, but he likes the Huntsman carriers also, very simuler.  The only thing I dislike about my Encore and Mossburg are the handeling of those tiny primers, I would love to be able to use a carrier in them.

I don't like them but they are okay.   :-)   Given my druthers, the Huntsman would have a solid barrel to the action and a more conventional breech plug with no need of a carrier or disc or whatchamacallit of any kind.  Couple that with a more cleaning-friendly action, a lower hammer spur, and a good ramrod that would be long enough to load without any trickery (change the forearm mount to accomodate) and you would have a great rifle (that is, IF the new breech plug were to be removable by a standard socket instead the insane device now provided).   :shock:

But since that ISN'T what H&R/NEF is producing, I'll settle.   :lol:   Still a darned good little rifle and mine is a shooter as most seem to be.

You might be able to get a custom breech plug made, but you would be on your own there.  There is even a place that sells conversion to smokeless...........
