First BLT from the garden, next FGT
« on: July 18, 2023, 07:40:46 AM »
Had my first BLT with a tomato from the garden. Spoiled, I will not buy tomato's from anywhere. Just don't taste the same. Now that is out of the way, fried green tomato's is next. Saved some bacon grease, slice them and egg wash them, cover with seasoned flour and fry in jowl bacon grease. I can feel my heart slowing down already!! ;D

I mostly eat just a couple slices of garden tomato on a slice of buttered toast. Salt and pepper of course.

What variety tomato are you growing.  My sister grew some year before last that were dark red and extremely tasty, but she could not remember the variety.  Those were the only good tomatoes I have had in the last 50 years.  I am not a gardener but I would like to grow two or three vines next year.

3rd it! BLT is my favorite breakfast now. I still have chickens (I don't know why) because I have grown to hate eggs fixed anyway but deviled.

I'm trying to remember, I think early girl, and big boy. There's so many different variety's now. I'll do some checking, there should be some info on what your looking for somewhere.

Must be 8-10 different varieties of tomato's that are deep red or purple. Cherokee red, Russian, an Italian deep red, quite a few others. Might want to check and see what looks like what your sister grew.

I will do some research before time to plant next spring.

BLT recipe:  Forget the L, 2 slices bread toasted, 1/2 pound bacon, enough tomato sliced THICK to cover the bread, and mustard.

Not quite a half pound of bacon, cut the mustard, and I'm all in.  ;D

The half pound before fried is only about a quarter of a pound after cooking.

I have grown many of the dark red/purple varieties and they all are superior in flavor .
If you have a season with heavy rains, some of them go bonkers and you may have a lot of tomatoes rotting on the vine or falling off and splitting on the ground.

Those on the ground can be eaten or are good for compost bins. 8)
