. . I laugh when I hear "preppers" saying buy gold for the coming economic collapse. In such a collapse who gets to decide what that gold is worth?
Buy long time storeable food. How will you prepare that food without others knowing it, and wanting it?
And my all-time favorite. Hoard 22 ammo for trade! Yeah, arm your enemies with ammo so they can load up, and take the rest. . .

Semi related-  I've asked many people online and otherwise the same question-
After the mess, and things calm down somewhat, how exactly are people with
gold going to make purchases  ? Say for instance,  Mr. Jones managed to
rebuild most of his small grocery store, and now does business a couple of
days each week whenever he can get reprovisisioned.
You need 2 loaves of bread, and 2 cans of beans. You have 3 gold ounce
ingots in your pocket. How do you pay for your food with your gold  ?
How do you expect the store owner to make change to you  ?
In what way can Mr. Jones check your gold bars for authenticity  ?
In what way can you check your change ( if somehow made in gold )
for authenticity  ?

I first asked a good friend these and similar questions years
ago when he was buying gold in various forms.  He got
fairly p.o.'ed that I'd asked him something that he
never considered, and so do about 70+ percent of
the people I've asked.
It's an honest question asked sincerely, but
it still chaps a lot of butts

I'd probably just take two of the gold ingots and buy his store.
Aim small, miss small!!!

That's why I have only 1 gold coin left me by my parents. Other than that I have some junk silver and, of course, some extra hardware that could be traded.

Back in the day…when local economies were at or just past the barter stage, gold coins were used to buy and sell. Certainly anyone carrying a three ounce ingot is gonna have problems trying to spend it. He might want to spend only part of it. Cut off a piece maybe as was done with gold spanish dollars…..often cut into eight pieces or bits for convenient use. Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar.
During the gold rush(es) spending gold dust was a common form of financing purchases.

Yeah, and in this day and time, everyone has a gold scale laying around, and even kids know what real gold looks like. It would be so easy in a economic crises to decide what a little sliver of gold cut off a random gold ingot would be worth also. And everybody knows how to check its purity.  ::)

Very true.
Alas..." and in this day and time"......none of the situations discussed are this day and time. normal social conventions lost...buying/selling/bartering, shortages, protecting against the mob.....these are part of s difficult future.

. . . which brings up another thing more avaluable then gold and thats canning jars and lids.

Wasn't too awful long ago that jars and
rings and lids were very scarce.
I've noticed that every year in this area
that gardening supplies such as vegetable
seeds and such get fewer each year, and
what there is sells out very quickly
I don't know of any of these people in this
area that even try to raise vegetables,
and I only know of one family member
that does, and they're about 400 miles away

You can buy 1/10 ounce gold Israeli Shekles.  They are about dime size.  However, 1/10 oz of gold is worth about $200.  Silver would be lower in actual value for daily trade.  1 oz of silver is worth about $30 now.  You can also buy smaller silver coins for easier barter.  Smaller sizes of gold, smaller sizes of silver, for actual barter or trade.  Food, medical supplies, ammo are the main three items of preppers.  Gold and silver are next.  Paying off all debt is also a necessity.  Growing your own food is also preferred, as well as raising chickens or rabbits.  Hunting and fishing also are necessary.  Preppers usually prefer to can food, not freeze it for longer term storage.  Vitamins deplete after about 2 years so that is why canned goods have a best by date on them.  Rotating food and keeping a good supply of vitamins rotated to use if food is getting older.  Bland food lasts far longer than foods with a lot of acid like tomatoes.  Having a lot of seeds stored for long term gardens.  Learning how to find wild eatables, and how to snare and trap for silent food gathering should also be essential.

A nuclear bomb exploded in space 250 miles above Kansas can cause all power in the US to be knocked out as well as southern Canada and northern Mexico by the EMP associated with the explosion.  A large solar flare while the US is facing the sun could do the same thing to the US.  It would take 6 months to a year to get power back on using existing power workers and their contractors.  In the meantime in 6 months without power 100 million Americans would die from starvation, cholera, and those on some type of life support, pace makers, etc.  People in big cities only stock an average of 3 days of food, in suburbs and small towns, 2 weeks, and in rural areas 6 months.  People in big cities will leave to find food and fresh water and will kill to get it.  A nuke could be launched by North Korea or Iran since they wouldn't care.

Banning generators is not only stupid but a bad idea.  They don't run all the time every day.

What to do?  Get less dependent on the grid, buy or make your own canned goods or dry goods, prep, hunt, fish, and learn to snare and trap.  Get as far away from big cities as possible.  Keep fit, and stay healthy as long as possible.  Warn your family and friends to do the same.  I feel it is coming sooner or later, maybe before Jesus returns.
