What a remarkable lady ! She was known as being especially attractive, and accomplished in the role of first lady.
She served as first lady, before she was first lady. Thomas Jefferson, by time he took office, was widowed (in 1782). SDo being part of the "Virginia presidents", he asked Dolley to serve in first lady details for him. So, when her husband was elected to replace Jefferson, she just continiued on in
her duties.
Her given name was Dorothea, Dolley being a nickname..and normally spelled wrong.
In 1814, when the British burned the White House, Dolley saved the Gilbert Stuart painting of George washington, for future generations to enjoy.
