Camo?? CAMO ???
« on: March 24, 2004, 10:59:51 AM »
I have recently been asking about camo patterns , and asking what some of my DU Chapter buddies like best?   Everyone has an opinion, but overall, I was wondering what camo this board uses?  Mossy Oak, Advantage, Realtree, Shadow Grass, Brush Country camo ???   There are many many patterns to choose from, and I know that the camo has to match the environment for best results......but I just wanted some opinions on what has worked best for you.

There are so many variables and styles involved in any kind of decision like that I am sure there is no correct answer.  I use different patterns depending upon on where I am hunting.

However our Game & Fish Department here has a suggestion to mix and match your camo pattern on different pieces of clothing and anything else.  They feel that is the most effective, and I tend to agree, even if I don't always do it.

Whatever is on sale.

I think camoflage is the most over-rated thing in the hunting arena.  The old "hunters plaid" was just as effective in hiding your outline as any of the current camo patterns.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

I only wear camo when turkey hunting, sometimes duck. Never for deer. I don't think it makes a bit of difference, watch the wind and stay still.

I  use the woodland pattern same as the army and a few of the older ones The names escape me now. I did just find a place to get the new Marine digital camo and I think I will be getting a few sets when I get the $$$ but at $40 for each piece it gets a little pricey.

I'm a Mosso Oak guy.  I do have a little Advantage Timber for Spring turkey hunting.  Mossy Oak Break-Up fits well where I usualy hunt.  I pretty much aviod Realtree because I don't like Bill Jordan.  It all depends on where and when you hunt.

This is absolutely true.

Ditto dukkillr.  I second that.

However there is something cerebrial when going into the woods, sitting still or creeping along, sniping for game, wearing camo.  Sure you can wear street clothes, but you don't as readily enter that "lurking presence" you get when wearing camo; a predatory instinct that is deeply ingrained to "blend in".

There are two things that automatically set off red flags with me when I'm talking to someone who claims to be a hunter.  1) Their camo 2) Their choke tube.  Those are the two things that magazines sell the hell out of.  Consequently people who spend far more time reading than hunting will talk about them.

I normally get what ever is on sale pattern and style means nothing to me. One of the reasons I where camo when hunting is it keeps it separate from my street close and I do wash my hunting close in backing soda. I do like the military camo it does a good job of breaking up your outline.

What I really love is when I see peole buying camo "pocket geat" such as wallets knives and other things that will stay in the pack or pocket.

What?  How can you judge a man's hunting or woodsmanship skills by the clothing he wears?  Or how widely read or not?   It is also inferred from your post that those who spend far more time writing than hunting ...

As for choke tubes, I'll let you be the judge of that.  Make mine the improved cylinder that came with the shotgun and I'm good to go.  The ducks don't seem to be any more or less dead when I pick them up.

I'm still wearing my army BDUs from10 years ago.  I don't think camo is generally necessary for big game hunting and often hunt in the cloths I work around the farm in.  I do wear white if there is snow on the ground, it amazes me how close to an animal you can get wearing white in the snow.  More important to me, for bow hunting especially, is how quiet a fabric is for still hunting.  If I do buy camo I get whatever is on sale.

Same here, whatever I can buy on sale to get the most bang for my buck.  I don't prefer to hunt in camo, but anymore it seems that the only affordable clothes for hunting have to be in camo.  Just picked up a $150 waterproof fleece set for $70 at a local store.  I gun hunt, so I have to wear hunter orange, but sometimes I feel a bit silly having nice (sometimes expensive) camo covered up with a $10 blaze vest.   :P
