   If we want to go back far enough, black soldiers served for both the union and confederacy..as well as the revolution and every war between,
   and they did it in separate units. They were once used as slaves too !

Up into the Vietnam Era racism largely affected all branches of the military. A well known fact by anyone routinely conscious.
