Why We Need A New Forum
« on: March 25, 2004, 01:47:42 AM »
Half of our time is spent arguing over what is proper, and what is improper to discuss on a "Traditional" Forum.
Nobody has had their views changed in all this arguing.
So, let's split this forum.
One new forum will be "Round Ball and Black Powder Muzzleloading"
This is for the purists. It is for pre 1840 muzzleloading only.
The other forum will be "Sidelock Muzzleloading Forum"
This is for a guy with a Lyman who wants to shoot conicals, or for a guy with a TC Hawken who wants to shoot 777.

This will end the bickering and we can get back to enjoying the camaredarie of muzzleloading.
Aim small don't miss.

I don't think another Forum is needed, I really do not see arguing over what is proper, and what is improper to discuss on a "Traditional" Forum.
What I have noticed is how people in the shooting community criticize others for what they like to shoot. An opinion is great but if you don't like some guns that OK, just support it. I do not want to start any flame wars, just some need to tone it down on what they believe it should be. If you are a Traditional muzzleloader hunter and think that is the best way, great but other see it different and should be able to make that choice. :)
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

Nice thought, I don't agree with it though. Just remove the "Modern Inline" fromthe Modern Inline Muzzleloading rifles and shotguns forum and put the words "any muzzleloading technology here" under the header. Then place under the "TRADITIONAL Muzzle Loading Rifles & Shotguns" header the words: "Diehard Traditionalists only". I'm not entirely sure it would work either though.

I am sorry to say I think that would never work.  You would end up needing a separate forum catagory for each individual, as some can't seem to tolorate anyone else's opinion or even contemplate that someone else can hold a valid opinion different from their dogma.

When the poll was made asking if we wanted to split the muzzleloader forum, I voted yes, now I see that was probably a mistake.  However there is an easy solution in just more descriptive subject lines.  Then if you don't like it or are not interested, don't go there.

   Awwwwwwwwwwwww...come on guys...................this forum has been split once already.............we dont need it again.  At least that is my opinion on it.  For the most part everyone seems to get along here and I would like to keep it this way .  We will always have someone asking a question that is a little off for the forum but that is our job to help them in answering thier questions and maybe directing them to other forums.  We all have opinions, and that is what keeps life interesting, and the nitpicking just puts everyone off when it occurs.  As far as I am concerned,if it is not an inline as in modern format,it belongs here unless it is really obtuse.  Stay safe......King

Frankly I'm sick of getting along.  "Let's all get along" BAH!  What the heck is wrong with a good manly debate?  If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.  Where would we be if Sam Adams, Patrick Henry and the rest of the Continental Congress cowered at the thought of spirited debate?

To eliminate all arguments so that we will all "get along"  we can have separate forums for:
A)flintlocks and roundballs only
B)Caplocks and roundballs only
C)Caplocks and conicals
D)Flintlocks and conicals
E)Sidelocks and fiberoptic sights
F)Smoothbore with bead front sight only
G)Smoothbore with rear sight and front sight
H)Flintlock with bevel up
I)Flintlocks with bevel down
J)Flintlocks with cut flints
K)Flintlocks with Duraflints
L)Caplocks with musket caps
M)Caplocks with 209primers
N)Caplocks with #11 caps
O)Patched roundball shooter's who cut at the muzzle
P)Pre-cut patched roundball shooter's
Q)Swaged roundball shooter's
R)Cast roundball shooter's
S)Cast roundball shooter's using wheelweight alloy
T)Muzzle loaders who vote Republican
U)Muzzle loaders who vote Democrat
V)Semi-custom muzzle loaders
W)Custom muzzle loaders
X)Italian-made muzzle loaders
Y)Muzzle loaders who swab between each shot
Z)Muzzle loaders who don't wash their hands after swabbing

Black Jaque Janaviac,

Sir,
I agree with Black Jaque Janaviac to disagree - that is if you agree with agreeing on this forum.  Otherwise I would have to disagree.

Chat rooms are for spreading ideas which might not be palatable to others.  If somebody doesn't like something, they should have the right to say "I don't like it".  That's what this country is all about.

I agree that we should agree to disagree. As long as you agree that I am right in my disagreement. At least on alternate Tuesdays that end in the letter Y. But we must agree that pink guns of any sort are not to be considered traditional on any day regardless of the letter with which it ends. Unless the shooter is wearing a ballet dress and riding an elephant. That is a sight worth seeing-unless of course he is shooting sabots!

228 years ago, there was no air conditioning in the congressional hall, and they served rum while in session.  They produced a new nation, The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Today,  they have air conditioning, no booze, and they produce The Patriot Act.

228 years ago, Patrick Henry could keep an audience riveted to their seats for DAYS with intense oration.  Taverns were places where men went to swill booze a argue politics.

Today political debates are yawners.  Taverns are places where men go to swill booze and watch Jerry Springer!

No. you did not make a mistake, that is a pretty logical cutoff, old vs. new. Discussions about loading each type of weapon should always be fair game on the appropriate forum. I don't EVER want to be part of a discussion where everyone agrees about EVERYTHING!

So let me be sure I understand:

Conicals are a no-no, except for the conicals the Captain Patrick Ferguson used at Woolich in 1776 in his rifle, along with round balls;

Breech-loading cartridge guns are a no-no except for Johannes Pauli's flintlock that Napoleon rejected for service in 1811;

Repeaters are a no-no, except for Berselli-Cooke flintlocks circa 1700.

So if you do not enjoy or appreciate the item, it's a no-no, but it's fine for forum if you do.

Now, I get it.

Naphtali,

A person can write about the older rifles that you mentioned, but I doubt that he will get many replies because of their uniqueness.

I can't speak for others, but I will speak my mind if I don't appreciate or enjoy an item posted.   I will also speak my mind on the opposite.

What it gets down to is that we all have our unique opinions about everything.  I, for one, have no problems with reading yours.

Nice list black but you forgot to break down by ram rod also. some use wooden some use aluminum some even steel then there is hunting rod verses range rod.  And some use musket caps

Lewis and Clark had a muzzleloading air rifle with them.  Where do we discuss these?  How about a new forum?   :)   I have been lurking for some time and enjoy the debate but don't generally care to get involved with the "we they" arguments.

Where will my smooth bore underhammer fit in?
It is stainless steel!
The stock is aluminm with laminated walnut.
So where will this one GO??
Oh, and it is a 7 ga.

The only way the new kids will learn, is by listening to the "Old Farts"!
So we need to tell and show them "the old ways"

I like shooting big round balls, but not everyone does, and that is Ok with me.

Let's discuss Lewis and Clark's air rifle....................I'm done.
Welcome to the forum. I hope that you enjoy exchanging your ideas and thoughts with the others that hang out here.

sabotloader,

Lewis and Clark carried an air rifle with them, a .40 caliber I believe.  They used it with great success showing the great medicine to the indians.  I have seen a copy here in Idaho and it really looks quite modern actually.

You know, it does belong here in the Traditional forum.  You should write it up real well and post your thread.  Good luck with it.

I'm just now noticing this rather old thread. I seldom visit these forums on muzzle loaders.

Like Tom I still think it was a mistake to split the forum when I did and rest assured there will be NO MORE splitting. Might be a recombination but there will NOT be another split.

Discuss and argue all you like. Just do so politely as gentlemen. Follow the site rules and I could care less how much you disagree.

"opinions are like belly buttons--we all have one" When we don't want to hear others opinions and can't agree to disagree, we are in big trouble.  I'm still trying to learn from others failures and sucesses. I am a died in the wool traditional muzzleloader--but I aplaud anyone who keeps shooting and hunting alive and well.
