heres a quote from car and driver when the tested the old ford lightning supercharged 2x4. "Two types of people drive 2 wheel drive trucks. those who buy them to go fast and buy trucks like this and those who wear penny loafers they have no intension of getting dirty and put a jacket on and grab there cane before they go trekking to Mc Donalds for their free senior citizen coffee"

ya me too that quote was made by loafer and docker wearing yuppys. only rag worse is motor trend. to them if its american its junk. dont much care for the magazine but always got a snicker out of that quote. its missing one bunch though. the 70 year old city folk from down south that haul there huge campers up here in the summer and about take over the area. youll see quite a few 2x4 3/4 tons pulling them. .

  Lloyd..please don't generate a vascular collapse.. My goodness, i look at your frustrated lash out..and i hav econcern for your health..

  Let's look together at your post;

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  " yup because you cant afford a more expensive truck or house or anything else you a better christian and i have the mentality of a murdering dictator :o  Fact is, I could afford a new one, but you don't know what I can afford.
   ..And BTW.. how did our shared Christian faith come into this discussion?  This is a truck forum
  so your also so talented that you can drive a 2x4 truck as well in a blizard as i can a full sized 4x4 ::).    HUH ?
   ive send my wife to work on one of the worse 5 mile stretches of road not only in MI but in the midwest. its is closed more than all other roads in mi are combined. its 30 yards from the shore of lake superior with no wind break. she drove it in a small buick for half of one winter and came home crying. we went and bought her a new full sized chev 4x4. she sat up higher and could see better through the snow wash of the tires of the vehicle ahead of here.
    Good for her, I am pleased that you gave her more comfort and peace of mind..
  had much better traction and control in 4x4 auto mode and a full sized steel frame and some actual sheet metal to protect her.
     EXCELLENT !
    if you want to send yours out or have her get caught in one with less i guess thats your call.    No problem there, my wife passed
     away 6 years ago.. she is in a far better place, and has no such concerns now.
    I live in snow country. the up of mi gets between 300-600 inches of snow a year. im sure not macho here with a big 4x4 because ever mom driving to work like my wife has one. id bet 80 percent of working class familys have a 4x4 truck or at least a sport utility.
    I'm happy that they are happy..besides, living in th ebalmy snow belt, I hav eno concept of your snow  ;D
   crap anyone one with a brain that can afford one has one. the poor people just drive older rusty ones. id be willing to bet you a grand that you could come up here for a week and couldnt find 3 2x4 pickups in the whole county. not like that in upstate ny?
      It's about the same around here..except we let others choose what they wish to drive..
 maybe then dee is a little right about the liberal save the planet mentality has a place in upstate ny just like in the city. [
    color=blue]Now that you have vented, do you feel better?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Let us now look back at the OP.  "Looks like Toyota wants to build MY kind of pickup"

   Did I say YOUR kind of pickup?  NO!  Did I sat Bill's kind of pickup?  NO!  I clearly said .."MY kind of pickup"..

   Now, after your emotional release...I do drive a 4X4, and it serves me well...I just suggested that I like the Spartan trimmed vehicles more than
   the seemingly plush models that are popular...just a PERSONAL preference....not an attempt to twist your tail !

   My vehicle is my TRANSPORTATION...not my person or personality !

      I am retired and my vehicle is in great shape at 60K so I suppose it will outlast me, since I don't rack up many miles.  I don't understand why
     the fact that I llike this new model offered by Toyota, disturbs you so much. It is an OFFERING, and nobody HAS to take it..

     Sorry...if i spoiled your dinner..
       ..But this new model that Toyota offers, should not stress you out so much ...
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

here you go. your probably pretty close to woodstock so the hippy mentality might be what were dealing with here

   Funny you should mention that, but I recently thought I may just get the little Scion coupe to dart about the countryside with, but rationed more
   wisely about it... without the funny paint job,since Woodstock is 350 miles away..  I once had a red Miata sports car, but decided storing 7 months
   so I could drive it for five, was inefficent..so I sold it.

  ..But speaking of that Miata...if you wanted to test me when I had that...I would have simply led you through some of our mountain roads and
   chicanes around here...and your big, multi liter, high rise wou be left wondering what happened. " Different strokes for different folks!"

    Keeping an extra vehicle just to dink around with, doesn't appeal to my idea of efficency...although I may yet do it, if I can somehow justify it..

  I'm NOT going to pick sides in this, but I am going to speak from experience.

  The UP of Mi. sucks.  Upstate New York sucks!  IF I had to choose just one to live in forever, I'd pick the UP in a heartbeat!

  I bought a Toyota pu one time, it jumped out of reverse from the day I bought it (manual tranny) Worse yet, it started hard in the cold!  Other than that, I kinda liked it, but hard starting in cold weather sent it down the road!  I bought a Chevy, and it was a MAJOR step UP.

  I have a manual tranny pu now, in fact two of them, both have roll up windows, I HATE them!

  I don't need a "loaded" truck, but I do want AC, power windows and locks and an auto tranny, the Silverado I own now has all of that and it's so far, the best pu I've ever owned!

  I can pull my PJ trailer loaded with a farm tractor down the road and get better fuel millage than my old trucks got empty and do it in comfort!  It has more power than they did too.

yup theres no need to compromise on comfort today. can you imagine putting 300 miles in a day in that little glorified go cart ig likes so much. i think he kind of blew a cork though. every time he is in a panic because hes been out argued he resorts to all the pretty colored quotes. usually theyre reserved for dee but im the lucky man today. by the way ig, what did you do for a living? i know you put 4 years in the army but dont recall you ever saying what you did for the other 30 or so years.

I have had one car with power windows, very, very annoying when they go pfft.
 I drove with  manual brakes ans steering up to the nineties.

Air Conditioning can be nice but I learned from other person's cars, in very hot weather, having to get out of an air conditioned car into uncomfortable heat is not good for ones ability to deal with it, so while I have had two cars with air conditioning that kinda-sorta worked, I still drive with the window down. 8)

  I agree, power windows didn't use to be reliable enough, but these days that has changed, as for the AC, you don't have to turn it up so high that shocks you when you stop.

  I HATE the noise coming from an open window, and AC doesn't cause any more MPG loss than an open window does, but I know there are folks that prefer the dark ages too.  lol

  This thread started out about a 10K Toyota, I'd buy one for an ATV, but I wouldn't want to be stuck with that-terd for a daily driver.

    From Drilling man;    I'm NOT going to pick sides in this, but I am going to speak from experience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    No need to "take sides", since there are no "sides" to take...
    I hesitate to belabor it to redundancy, but the OP clearly said:  " Looks like Toyota wants to build "my kind of pickup".
    Clearly, I did not say they are building Bob's , Lloyd's, Drilling man's or Bill's kind of truck...  just "my kind" of truck..
     Sure there may be others out there who would or would not like trhat truck...but that is their choice, i doubt anyione is going to force
    anybody to buy the Toyota..
   I guess the thing that startled me most, is that I should be hit right off, not with a simple "gentleman's disagreement, but rather with outright
   hostility!
  I didn't expect outright hostility, especially involving an issue that involves free choice for everybody and forced compliance from nobody..!
IG, I don't see where YOU were hit with hostility.  Rather, they were hostile to THAT truck.  You're taking it personal that they didn't like your choice.  No harm, no foul.
IG, I don't see where YOU were hit with hostility.  Rather, they were hostile to THAT truck.  You're taking it personal that they didn't like your choice.  No harm, no foul.
   Perhaps you need to look closer;
  In reply #6 he said, referring to my choice,"every 18-25 year old girl will drive them."  Obviously a broad brush. Npot necessaarily my choice, and
  likely not every 18-25 year old girl makes the same choice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  In reply #18..he implies that I either settled for a crappy job, or spent my life on welfare and is now poor for that reason..all of which are untrue..
   Would you consider that hostile if said of you?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  REply #20.."You buy your Yugo"..  Again false.and foolish!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  Reply #27 .."You're probably pretty close to Woodstock, so the hippy mentality may be what we are dealing with here."

      A falsehood in two ways, no hippy mentality (an insult) and the old Woodstock site is 350 miles from where I live.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
   Thgen in reply #26, he really delves int to dung heap...making false assumptions and bringing religion into the mix, completely unrelated.. DUH!
   "yup because you cant afford a more expensive truck or house or anything else you a better christian and i have the mentality of a murdering
  dictator"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  Religion has no place here..but if he wishes, we can go to that forum...and his self description of a "murdering dictator" is totally his own..

   His mistake by assumption, the last 2 homes I bought, I paid cash for...as is true of the last several vehicles I bought.  I just don't like being in debt and having another man's horse collar about my neck.  Is it possible that Lloyd has a problem understanding the man who enjoys the
   art of simple living ?

    Now Casull.. If such accusations were made of you, would you consider them hostile or completely benign. ?

yup theres no need to compromise on comfort today. can you imagine putting 300 miles in a day in that little glorified go cart ig likes so much.   Sometimes a man likes to take a challenge...sometimes he has to do the manly thing...just to keep in mind his station.  When my wife was alive HER CAR had the comfort items.  I guess I don't know what a MAN requires , but I have driven many miles in Jeeps and deuce and a half trucks with an open top...and often no top at all.  I have driven a beetle from western Ny to the texas coastr non-stop..no powder puff here.

i think he kind of blew a cork though. every time he is in a panic because hes been out argued he resorts to all the pretty colored quotes.

  "Out argued".. :D ;D, well I must confess, you made a plethora of noise, along with your lingual rudeness..  As often happens, when an antagonist runs out of ideas or originality...they resort to garbled verbage ..or verbal garbage in their frustration, and resort to pure rudeness. "

   usually theyre reserved for dee but im the lucky man today. by the way ig, what did you do for a living? i know you put 4 years in the army but dont recall you ever saying what you did for the other 30 or so years.  " Not that is of any pertinence to you, but I served more than 4 years in the Army, spent about 30 years in construction trades..building silos, maintaining tanks, towers and bridges and finally ending up, working with a fortune 500 electronics firm, running a department..
   Of course, worked on my Dad's dairy farm before Army, and spent a couple years after retirement.operating a hardware store.

      Many adventures woven in those pursuits also..  One thing I learned through life..  We do not all live/think the same.. Some crave fame..some
   seclusion.  To some riches are important..to others, they are secondary.

   Some people become addicts..to tobacco, alcohol or other.        ...others wouldn't touch them.

  Some like to gather "things"..   Others prefer a Spartan lifestyle.

   I am 87 now, and may soon be taking that last trip on earth.  What good will an accumulation of "toys" do, othe than to leave an accumulation
   to be disbursed by my son or grand kids, all of whom have plenty more than they need already.  Some love toys..smoe say..eehhh
    I have a bank account, and that will be easier for them to disburse.

  After that last ride, my real joy begins, which will far surpass all the "toys" anyone can buy...and I have my reservations already made.

   BTW: I understand you spent some years with the Navy, and beyond that..you worked as a pole-lineman. is that it?

or crew leader at radio shack or best buy. no other reason for all the mystery. i didnt tell you i played with big wood things and dee didnt tell you he road around in a car all day. so let me figure this out if my math is right you went in the service around 1954 and came out around 1959. pray tell what kind of an electronics fortune 5 company existed then. tvs were black and white with tubes and i dont believe even fm radio existed then. wasnt really till the 70s when crude electronics were coming out. wasnt till the late 90s that electronics and computers were owned by the masses. when i was a kid in the 60s if you had a pocket am transistor radio and a reel to reel tape recorder you were high tech. so what did you do from 1960 till there was an actual fortune 500 electronics business. unless you were a supervisor for NASA

In regards to the original topic. As I said before, I might buy the stripped down Toyota in white. My oldest son loves bass boats. I like canoes.
I drive what I consider a nice pickup, but it's classified as a work truck. I don't care.

My all time favorite car is a 55 Chevrolet 2 door poster. Hardtops were noisy. And if somebody out there is planning on surprising me with a completely  restored 55, a six cylinder standard shift 3 speed will be fine.

I don't care what anyone else drives, or doesn't drive. Shoots, or doesn't shoot. Owns, or doesn't own.

I worked as a cowboy when I was young, and learned I couldn't support a family very well on cowboy wages. Went back to college (but didn't finish my degree) and worked for IBM in personnel for about 3 years. I hated every minute of it.
I policed about 20 and learned that most people are full of sh%t, and went into trucking, owning my own trucks. Here, I became debt free. I flipped a few houses, I sold Harley Davidson motorcycles a few years, and then I retired. Again
Now, I take care of somebody else's cattle, and pretty much do what I want, when I want. I don't owe anybody, I don't need anymore than I have, and when I die, a few might miss me, and some will be glad I'm gone.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

    Dee summed it up quite well for me, when he said;

     " I don't care what anyone else drives, or doesn't drive. Shoots, or doesn't shoot. Owns, or doesn't own."

    ...Which is why I finished the OP title with; " my kind of pickup"..

I. G. Answered your question about his work history a few posts back. I already knew he worked in the construction field for many years after leaving the army as I tend to remember that type of information when I get it.

      "Talking jobs"?  Where does that come in ?

   Further quote.." and sorry but i dont sugar coat."

  Youb don't seem to be able to differentiate.. to "not sugar-coat"  means to tel the TRUTH..even if it is painful..

   However, when you come up with pure fiction such as the following.....

   " drive something like that or a smart car and im going to say you probably did your richard simmons work out today and are now jamming to elton john all scrunched up driving that pos tring to keep up to freeway speed without the wind off some semi making you crap your tighty whiteys."

  That "light years" away from truth, honesty or candor..  Cannot you resist your inclination to falsify and insult ?

LOL! Come on ironglow. When testosterone levels go down, lift kits, and horsepower go up. Tires get bigger (nuts get smaller), exhausts get louder, BS gets deeper, and garages get crowded. Everybody seems to know that, but you. And he who dies with the most toys, WINS! 8)

  LOL... ;D ;D ;D  You have perhaps hit the nail on the head..ans I believe we have seen glaring examples of same.

  I think maturity (age) tends to bring on a certain realization that such props do not help or actually bring any special respect.

  I'm not suggesting that others do as I do. I am suggesting we each be allowed our choice, without criticism.

    Some times scripture can be a reminder, and although the following verse does not address this issue, the same wisdom seems to apply.

     " When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."

.  No..I'm not quoting any more, so don't switch to the other forum.. ;) :D

[ and finally ending up, working with a fortune 500 electronics firm, running a department..

Does that mean you worked in a department of a retail store? :-\

   Sorry Dee, I missed your above question, first time around..  Nope, my last 18 years regular work, was with xxxx  I am just
   hesitant to mention corporate names, due to THEIR sensitivity..and some projects we worked on. ..I may delete later.

     Yes, forgot to mention, I had some years as parts manager for agricultural equipment.  and after retirement I also was administrator of
   the local cemetery.

  Which reminds me...  I buried guys who had barns full of "toys"..their graves were still 8'X42" and about 5.5 feet deep..no extra room for toys.

  ..And you know very well, what counts most at that point.. :D

Well Lloyd,  you don't know if they were bored, or wasted their life. You didn't know them. And it depends on one's definition of what fun is.

I gave up hotrods in my  teens for horses, and girls (not necessarily in that order). I personally wouldn't give a hot, high performance car a first, or second look. I consider them a waste of time, and money, and a nuisance on the highway.
I have all the guns I want, and fancy loaded out pickups are also (to me) a waste of money, but I've got a BIL that has 4 such trucks. None of the 4 will do anything mine won't do.

Many years ago it dawned on me that generally, I spend less than an hour a week in my truck. The rest of the time it sits in the garage. Toys to me are generally what controls most folks lives. The time a money dedicated to their upkeep is not for me.
Like i said before. I do what I want, when I want, and I don't want for anything.  :)
