snares

Trapshooter, Weather permiting I dont leave out a snare line longer than 3-4 days. For an example--January 1 some new ground opened for me. Now the weather was'nt the best, but OK.It was warm enough for the coon to move and not den up.But on the other hand,we were in for a blow,a gale, hard driving rain,A real NOREASTER as a matter of fact. The tide was a run'n about 3-4 foot above normal,so the tidal meadows were all under 2-3 feet of water, at high tide. This how ever helped me.Now the coon had to come in off the meader's, or tread water for 6 hours..I gang set all the good trails. With about 40 snares out. I got 10 coon the first time around,8 the next day,4 the third day.Now if it were'nt raining and blowing so hard I would have pulled, on this the third day. But I just ran the line.So now the 4th day, as I was pulling.I was wasting time.Did'nt catch nut'n.And I KNEW BETTER.You cant catch'm twice.
Now back to the fur shead and finish puttn'm up.

Dave, snares are cheep GANG SET.
On a line like you are discribing.I have to ask myself "SELF" Are you catching enough here to make it worth while? "SELF"Will your time be better spent pulling up this line and setting out a new line ? "SELF" Do you have anywhere to go that might produce more fur ?"SELF" Are you just playing or are you gona go to work and catch some fur ?

I go by the weather and the tracks or signs seen before i set the snare.  If the weather is in the high 30's to 40's i'll leave it as long as i have enough snares to spots.  If i'm short one i start taking snares from the non producing, less tracked up areas.  I'd say if the weather is good and the trail is being used let it be.  If its cold and snowy coon might only run every 3rd day or so.  If your snaring coon in cold weather just be patient.
