98 GMC Sierra
« on: December 28, 2023, 03:09:16 PM »

Got in my truck this morning and  went to start it and it ran for 3 seconds and shut off .  Ran the battery down trying to get it started , but thats all it will do . Thought I would see if some of the gearheads on here  have experienced such a problem like that .

Well, it could be anything from electronic, to mechanical, to fuel, or anything in between. I'd start with fuel filter. After that I'd pull a plug wire and see if it's getting spark.
In fact, I'd check the spark first to see if it was firing. That doesn't cost anything to check, and it will give you an answer on that particular issue.

My first thought was a clogged fuel filter , its getting a spark because it runs for a few seconds and shuts off like its starving for fuel .  Maybe  a   sensor .

my moneys on the fuel pump but check first with a pressure guage and if you dont have one at least see if you have spark before you throw money at it. dont know what year they used them but many chev truck fuel filters are part of the pump and ive never heard of one plugging its VERY rare that even a frame mounted filter gets so dirty it plugs up. ive never seen even one do it and if it were that bad you would have got crappy fuel flow and performance for a while and probably a check engine light for to lean of a mixture. gm pumps last a long time but when they go they tend to just quit

I  can hear the  the fuel pump pressure up and switch off    , its inside the gas tank , I  put a new one in about 2 years ago . The filter is frame mounted so its not to much trouble  to change out and its due a new one anyway  .  Truck was starting fine before the temp. fell below freezing .  I'm thinking it maybe the mass air flow sensor .  going to start  troubleshooting there .

That would also be a good place to check.

another problem in that time frame was distributors. they were mostly plastic and had plastic gears that mess with steel on the cam. the wore out and even broke on high mileage motors. but surely check the easy things first. something else is even those rudimentary fuel injection systems had ecu's and any ecu can fail. one other thought is you said it didnt happen to it got below freezing. you could have water in your gas and iy could be just icing up. have you tried parking it somewhere warm for a few hours and than try it and see if it will run

Check the battery ground.
It doesn't cost anything, and with all
the electrical garbage on "modern "
vehicles it's something that has to be
maintained. A large percentage of the
vehicles that were in the shop for electrical
issues had bad ground, and probably as
many that had add-on electrical gizmos
installed so as to create an excessive draw
on a circuit not intended to carry extra load

Cleaning the battery terminals as a preventative
maintenance procedure will eliminate that
as a potential trouble area
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .
