Interesting cars of the past..
« on: January 13, 2024, 09:00:56 AM »
..There was a time when people here did not have near as much disposable income as many have these days .  So the car market  was ytoward smaller and more economical to produce cars.    Some here yes, but in other parts of the world too., an overbearing government may demand that we

Who knows the future... if they finally realize that electricity is not feasible for a mobil society, an overbearing government may demand that we
Goi to something like one of these for transportation.

have here, a collected group of  cars from the past, that may prove interesting. NO !!  I am not suggesting that anyone race out and find one of these
with which they may transport their families.. so don't jump on my case...

So, as very basic cars, heck these out...

   First; from France..       https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqErkcNWox4&t=49s

    Now: from the USA..    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMpdnlwsLFY

No cars, just advertisements. Not worth the effort.

Perhaps everybody is familiar with these cars, but I figured many were not..so I thought I picked videos that showed then interior, exterior , engines
and had relatively good explanations...  Where did I come up short?

I have long thought that the  bantam may have served as the inspiration for Donald's car..

Another angle;

After WW2, when Germany, Italy and Japan were still partially lying in ruins..  They wanted to get people back into transportation as soon as
possible, so they could actively participate in the work force.  Most of the nicer, more luxurious cars came along later.

While I lived in Germany '62-'65) I noticed some interesting, 'stop gap' vehicles which were popular at that time.
Of course, no more combat aircraft were  being built by Germany.   So looking to rebuild, some aircraft companies decided to build basic
   transportation.

Heinkle built the primary German heavy bomber, the HE 111..   So it was a natural to build a small car with a aircraft style cabin.

Here is the Heinkle.. a small car with a aircraft style cabin, this one, a sun roof model.

     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUAiQ2TI2HY

Messerschmitt built the ME 109 fighter aircraft of WW2, a fighter plane rhat gave our P51 Mustangs and the British Spitfires all they wanted to
fight...and sometimes more.  Here is the Messerschmitt 3 wheeler

   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx3tBUnq0kY

The 2 above cars were quite popular, and I saw them often...and as I recall, occasionally on the autobahn.  But much more popular than both
of the aircraft company cars, was this entrant, the BMW Isetta.  BMW boughtthe rigts from Isetta, an Italian refrigerator company..then re-
engineered the whole car. Not a true 3 wheeler, but 4 wheels, with a narrow rear axle.

Here is the BMW Isetta..   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0dEzY-xld8   With this car, you are assured to be "first at the scene of the accident"

They were available in 4 passenger models also.

All I see is a 30 second Honda advertisement followed by a discussion of a medical break thru. Where are the cars? Dunno why all I see are ads and not cars but that's it. No way to avoid the ads either.

Don't know what has happened Bill, but the first one shows a Citroen 2CV, the second shows an American Bantam convertible..

I still see both when I click onto them  I guess I will have to try a couple more Youtube videos of the same cars..

   Citroen 2CV...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4hes7caHCg     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gojvdvcAfXs

Next; American Bantam roadster, one video icalls it Austin American Bantam..but Austin was only here from 1931-1934, then everything went Bantam

So here is the Bantam:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgkOWEpUQQk     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-fqajLRXFA

Hope at least one of each gets through to you OK..

Bantam also  made sedans, trucks etc..  In fact, they actually built the first Jeeps for WW2..but since they could not produce the numbers the government wanted, the contract was handed to Willys and Ford.

Good, Glad to hear!  That Citroen is often referred to as the French Farmer's car, and is built strictly utilitarian.  great latitude of spring rate and
height is obvious.  One of the demands made upon the designer was, that the car must be able to "cross a freshly plowed field with eggs aboard,
and not break one".  The remarkable suspension is unique to the 2CV..

The aim was low cost and simplicity..Interesting how they solved many issues, without the high cost of special technology, which of course, added to
the car's reputation for dependability.  The less parts and complications there are to a design...are the less that can go wrong.

Both, the Citroen more then the Bantam are good go to the grocery store/run errands cars, nothing more.

Some people love the 2CV and just as many hate it.

The Bantam is worth more money nowadays.

Yes..the Citroen 2CV is a car most people who know trhem have a love~hate relationship with , few being neutral.  They can be seen in france, hauling everything from lumbr, to clothing  or chickens.
The very unique suspension gives a soft ride with long travel, and ruggedness.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkMTE55v2o0&t=8s

Then there are the frankophiles among us who simply must have one, due to their love of anything French.
