Pocket knives 2024
« on: February 03, 2024, 01:40:24 PM »
Don't need anything myself. I wisely bought
a store's worth of stuff I really didn't need
back when I had money overflowing my
pockets.
A young relative was talking about this knife
and that,  and I noticed that they're all $100.00
and up.
Are there not any affordable serviceable
pocket knives made in America anymore
for less than a day's pay?

I don't count Case anymore. The last couple
I've bought new weren't up to the standard
of 30-40 years ago, and IMO were built for
looks rather than usefulness. I have some
70's-early 80's vintage that are razors, and
some early 2000's vintage that look fantastic
but don't stay sharp or sharpen worth 10 cents.

I've got a couple of case lock blades in carbon steel bought about 2 years ago, and they seem as good as ever. I seldom carry a pocket knife anymore though, I carry a Moore Maker fixed blade in a horizontal sheath. Its also carbon steel. It was made in 2015, and last Saturday I cut 3 bull calves with it and it was still razor sharp.

Bear is about 7 miles by road from my house, less as the crow flies. Good solid knives, I have way more of them than I need. I've gifted several to friends.

I have a couple of the Bear when
they were Bear MGC
I noticed they offered an aluminium
handle sodbuster pattern, but at the
time, they only had stainless blades
and they were on backorder.
I have enough myself to last me of
Eye Brand and Case and one or two
Boker and Imperial and Moore Maker.

The Moore Maker I have are probably
made by Bear for them because I also
have identical ones from Bear.
I'm told that Bear makes the lower priced
Moore Maker and Queen makes the higher
priced higher quality knives for them.
The fence pliers and the other Moore Maker
tools are made in the PH by a company
that is unknown to me

Moore Maker.. one I have not heard of..  Sad to report..Queen, once owned by Ontario, then on it's own..is no longer being manufactured.   On a
photo shoot with my son, I went down to Titusville about a year ago, doing an industrial shoot in the same industrial park as Queen..they are
    defunct..

However, I believe some of their execs and craftsmen are now involved with Great Eastern, still in titusville, but I hav enot been to their shop..

Unfortunately, the great eastern knives
I've looked at and handled were all
$120.00 and up knives.
I don't think that they offer any 40-50-60
dollar knives.
That was sorta ok for me when I used to
be able to just buy stuff on a whim and
toss it in a box or a drawer and not think
about it, but those days are long gone
(for me)
I've done too much knife work and fish
and game dressing with 10-50 dollar
knives to know that a knife doesn't have
to cost a day's pay to be serviceable.

Yes, they are beautiful and precise...but "closet queens" (collectors)...not for hard use..

This sod buster looks good...and if it is genuine German made..

Then there are the Svord knives..especially the Svord "peasant" knives, forged carbon steel.Made in New Zealand, but available from various cutlery sites here innthe US..  Such as Knife Country, shown above.

Kershaw folder made in the USA...

Not all of their models are, but the ones I buy are made in the US and they have excellent blades in them.  This is my daily carry knife,

https://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Stainless-SpeedSafe-Single-Position-Pocketclip/dp/B0009VC9RW/ref=sr_1_8?crid=U830UOWLM6UO&keywords=kershaw%2Bassisted%2Bopening%2Bknives%2Bmade%2Bin%2Busa&qid=1707147603&sprefix=usa%2Bmade%2Bkershaw%2Bknives%2Caps%2C238&sr=8-8&th=1

I watch Cabela's sales and every once in a while I can buy one cheaper and better yet, use my Cabela's points so I get it for FREE.

Different models have different lengths of blades.

My every day carry is a Kershaw that I've used for 20+ years. Has orange scales which helped me find it after I lost it in the grass for about a week. The only thing I consider similar in quality is my Leatherman Multi-tool which I also carry every day.

The Leatherman is a useful tool. I had several copies over the years but they tended to bend or break. Then one day I was inspecting a subdivision project and noticed a pipe layer prying an 8" water line together with a multi tool, successfully. After he was done, I asked what brand? It was a Leatherman. When I got home that evening I had one on my belt. I still carry it today, over twenty years later.

I've had and tried a few different
multi tools, but never had the uses
for one to justify toting one. I still
have a Leatherman mini from many
years ago in my hunting box, but I
can't remember the last time I took
it out to use it for something.
There's legions of people that apparently
use them a lot, because there's a
gazillion and four variations offered
and sold nationwide
