My friends buy used trucks , from several car companies, and I personally think from seeing what they have had, modern trucks rust out quicker than those from the past.
Theirs were all bought used but less than ten years old and all have had serious rust problems within 4 years.

Used to have to watch out for "flood"
vehicles in this region.
Mainly from the Houston area.
When they get one of those big storm
surges, that brackish GOM water floods
a good many new vehicles sitting on the
lots, and soaks up inside everything.
The body is somewhat compromised, but
mainly the wiring and the electrical components
get that brine saturated inside.
Most are dried out and "saved", but in years
to come the corrosion will leach up the
wiring and start causing nearly undiagnosable
problems, some relatively minor, some really
head scratching and stroke inducing.
I've seen wiring harnesses with green corrosion
from one plug-in to all the others just green
green green with corrosion. There's no cheap
fix. If the insurance covers it at all, it'll
most likely total.
Just about the only way to tell the story
is way up under the dash, and removing
the interior finish panels to look for a
high water dirt line. Nothing else causes
that except if the vehicle has been
soaked in flood water. New vehicle warranty
doesn't cover any of that, and the warranty
will most likely be voided.
Get every little detail of your expectations
in writing when purchasing

When buying a used vehicle probably the best thing you can do is run an Autocheck or Carfax report for the history of the vehicle you're thinking about buying. Either one will give you a good history of the vehicles life including maintenance, accidents and the status of the title on whether it's a clear title or a salvage title.

Probably regional, but many problem
vehicles around here have been to
meck see ko and pieced back together
from several totaled vehicles and
mixed and matched in the most
amateur of fashion by the campesinos
over the line.
They'll usually have a pretty fair paint
job and fancy wheels and a loud
radio to distract from the shoddy
assembly of the frankenstein-mobile.

Or it might well have been a smuggling
vehicle. Many have hidden compartments
welded into the chassis, and some compromise
the integrity of the vehicle, and some don't.
A coworker bought an F150 some years ago
that had heat/ac troubles, and he finally
had to put it in the shop. The trouble was
found after some headaches and was some
hypodermics stuck inside the plenum
chamber where the evaporator core
and heater core is, and was holding the
damper door and blend air door open
and wouldn't allow them to move back
and forth. Something like that would be
a genuine suck-butt situation if you got
pulled over for a taillight or whatever
reason,  and they came up with a baggie
or some paraphernalia that really wasn't
yours at all, but there it is
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

What past are you talking about.  I remember the 70's when a vehicle would start rusting out in 2 or 3 years.  Much better today.

i bought a brand new 1979 k10 chev 4x4. after the first winter and still under the one year warrantee they had to replace the front drivers side fender because it had a rust HOLE. even worse back then were toyotas. used to be a joke that you couldnt find one more then 4 years old without a wood flatbed. the motors would outlast 3 bodys on them. fords were bad too. dodge was a bit better but not alot.

Friend bought a chevy Luv truck
new, never been in the salted roads,
back in the olden days.
I forgot exactly how long it was, but
one day he kept noticing hot air
blowing up his britches legs.
His first thought was heater damper
door malfunction, but it turned out
a sizable portion of floorboard had
rusted away, and wind was blowing
up into the cab. It was a for sure
rust wagon
