« on: March 25, 2004, 02:59:11 PM »
want to have a barrel built for my encore in 50 ak.i think i am going to order it thru virgin-valley.not to many others have the reamer ssk is $$ and the estimated time is longer.a friend of mine has a vv barrel in 257 rbts 12" and has had excellent perf.from it.fox ridge won't do a 50 cal.they said they had poor luck with them?would appreciate any suggestions as to barrel length diameter etc.im thinking 21" ss as light a contour as possible and maybe ported.thanks

How about 500 S&W

Greetings,

I got a 500 S&W from Virgin Valley.  It's a SS finish, 22 inch length barrel.  I've only shot it at 50 yards so far during scope sighting in / initial load development, but those round will overlap at that distance.   The recoil of this thing is pretty severe IMHO.

From my experience so far I'd highly recommend the VV / 500 S&W combo.  I don't have first hand knowledge of the 50 Ak round.  However, be forewarned that VV uses another supplier for it's 50 caliber barrel blanks.  I believe the supplier name is something like "Mountain Man".

Ive heard the full size Marlins that Wild West Custom makes the 50 alaskan in are brutal to shoot.  In the lighter Encore I would think it just as bad.  I would go with a heavy taper just to keep as much weight on as possible (which is still gonna be on the light side.)  Next I would get one of the various shoulder pads available.  Then I would slip a round in the chamber, tuck the gun in tight and pray to whoever is above just as I squeeze the trigger and......WOW, It hurts just thinking about it  :) .  I dont think you will have problems at all.  The 50 alaskan, although brutal to shoot, probably wont present any real problems, gunwise.  All I can say is you really do have a pair on ya  :D .  Tell us how things go when you get your new bbl in.

yeah i know that recoil will prob be an issue,i have some large stuff now 480 ruger,444p marlin but i really want a true 50 cal.the alaskan shoots a .510 t0 .512 dia. bullet.i'll prob have to slug the barrel to get an accurate measure.when i was doing research on the cartridge one guy wrote "the 50 alaskan designed by someone to knock a bear and the shooter on their a$$".thought that was pretty funny.the recoil should be no worse than the 50 encore muzzleloader with 300 gr sabot and 150gr of pellets?hopefully.thanks again

I do not have any velocity data for a 209x50 using an Encore bbl.  But I can confirm that the free recoil of the .50 Alaskan will be roughly the same as the .375H&H in an Encore.  I dont know if you have shot the H&H in an Encore, but if you have you will get an idea of what it will be like with the Alaskan.  Again, good luck and keep us updated.

I just bought the 375 H&H encore and it is hefty!! I have toned it down with reloads but I luv it!! Get a EER or extended eye relief scope because you will need it! It only hurts for a little while!! HA HA! good luck and let us know what you do!
