Eclipse headed our way
« on: April 02, 2024, 12:06:41 PM »
Coming eclipse is supposed to reach peak near the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area.. Not trhat it means much to me, but some folks are almost giddy over
it.  I don't have any great interest, and haven't purchased any of those special glasses needed to watch the show.

However, the various interstate highways have warnings which say "PREPARE FOR TRAFFIC HOLDUPS 4/8".  Hotels are said to be sold out in the
area, so many folks are expected to flock here from all over.

My son has a contract to film the event from a vantage point. so he will take his RV up there a day or two before the event..

I just stand here, wondering what all the fuss is about..

I've watched for the last one, and it's not really a
world shaking event to me
Lots of people here all giddy over it.
T - shirt vendors all excited.
Hotels booked up.
Police chief cancelled off-time for all officers.
City trucks will be kept off the streets to avoid
adding to the anticipated heavy traffic.
If I'm understanding correctly, there's tickets being
sold at the stadium for people to sit in a seat and
look up at the sky ( remember-there's one born every minute)
The "eclipse goggles " are sold out ( I merely put on my
welding helmet last time)

Just me- I prefer watching a sunrise provided daily
free for the viewing. More pleasing to me than
watching it subside

It's a big deal where we live in the Texas Hill country as well. Hotels and motels all booked up and the city leadership sent out a flyer for all of us locals to be sure and stock up on food and gas beforehand just in case there were shortages.

Agreed Ranger99, I'll settle for sunrises and sunsets any day.

So, hearing they were renting stadium seats to sit on while viewing the eclipse..AMAZING !  So I looked locally and found that there are as many
anal apertures here as anywhere.  https://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/event/see-the-716-eclipse-event/

Wasn't sure they would be doing that..because the NFL is playing jackass now.  They got the politicians, including the governor to force the
taxpayers to pay for a new stadium.

Once they got that nailed down..then they announced a heavy increase in ticket prices..

Governor and politicians didn't care what the taxpayers liked, and ignored the many taxpayers who don't give a hoot whether the
Buffalo Bills hang around here or not !  Far as I am concerned, they can shove off.

..But of course, so folks are so deeply invested in the games mentally, the NFL can do anything and they will grovel for "the team"..

Why can't these clowns save the $25 and watch the 3eclipse from their back yard, or at the village park?

Yeah.
I wonder how many people will be outside with their faces
turned skyward?
I've been thinking it,  so I might as well post it.
It'd be a juicy time for some evil somebody to
pop off an airburst and melt a billion eyeballs,
or spew a few chemtrails with so many nostrils
available and accommodating.

When I was young, there were no special glasses to view the eclipse with..so folks took a regular piece of glass and held it over a candle, until the
glass was smoked just dark enough to permit viewing.

Let's see.........

IG, you should like this, especially coming from me.   (Can't say this is verbatim, but)...."Thou shall take no God before me"....or something to that effect.  (My thought concerning this fervor over the eclipse.)

80% Tuesday
60% Wednesday

I wonder if all those people who paid for various
tickets and lodging, etc. will get a refund, or maybe
a rain check for the next total solar eclipse we have here  :D

Alas…..I am surprised a bit by the negative attitude expressed here. And yet….not surprised. Why criticize people who are doing something that they may well remember for the rest of their lives.

I hope I am not included in sharing a "negative attitude" over the event.  So far as I am concerned, they can enjoy themselves as much as they wish.

Who knows..maybe I'll take a look through my welding helmet? ..or maybe not, depends upon what I am doing at the time.

The part that amazes me, is that people will invest so much just to see something of which we already know what it looks like.

For example...a local stadium is selling seats at $25 a pop...not expensive...but why not just view it from you backyard or from a local park or trail?

Can they see it better from a seat in a stadium?

Other folks paying much more to board a cruise boat to observe..   Other than trying to figure that out, let them enjoy as much as they wish.

I would say that while this may be of some great event to some, it is meaningless to others. For me it is no more than a hindrance of my daily travel. I will look and marvel upon this exact passing and more than likely will be thought of less then my morning coffee through my final years, weighed upon by what is truly important to me... I must say, I look forward to this event.

I plan to watch it from the front yard, less than a mile off the centerline.  My first full eclipse in 73 years, have seen one partial.

Have been seeing ads for RV parking spots, $500 for 3 or 4 days.  That is absurd.

. . . Have been seeing ads for RV parking spots, $500 for 3 or 4 days.  That is absurd.

Lady on the "news " was relating about her family coming
here from out of state.  They had been shopping hotel rooms
and for whatever reason waited right up until zero hour,  and
their 78 dollar a night hotel rooms became 300 dollar a night
hotel rooms.  All rent cars booked up. All ride shares booked up.
Can't find the cardboard "eclipse glasses "
Stores expected to sell out of snacks and bottled water.

Didn't know about the world was supposed to be ending.
That's a new thing that's been tacked on to the eclipse
since all the shakedy shake shake experienced lately.
Some are saying that when the eclipse is happening,
armageddon will commence.  Folks are stocking up
on stuff for the world ending.
Why is that  ?  If the world does indeed end,  we damn
sure won't be needing anything of worldly value   :D  :D

THanks, as I said in the OP, my son has a contract to go to a venue near Rochester and photo, video & drone the event. He plans on taking his RV
which is also a portable studio, and stay through the event.

Perhaps he should call ahead..since $500 per night would take a whack out of a couple grand contract...

Agree with Lloyd.  Just don't care.  Maybe some of the same people who made Taylor Swift a billionaire will be filling the coffers of local businesses to see something just as unimpressive in my mind.

Y’know….I have to apologize. I have read through all of the responses to this thread and have come to realize that my Post (#11) about negativity was out of line…..presumptive and arrogant. Other people do not have to like the things that I like or even consider them worthwhile. Sometimes I forget this simple truth. That earlier post was one of those times.

I guess I don't understand the lack of interest in the eclipse *if* you are in the path of totality or close enough you can easily get there, or have relatives you could visit for, etc.  For most people, it's literally a once in a lifetime event to be in the path of a total solar eclipse.

Partial solar eclipses and lunar eclipses don't hold a candle to a total solar eclipse and if this was just another of those, I would understand since they really are underwhelming in comparison. A total solar eclipse is not like a partial eclipse at all, and it's not the same as the daily nightfall by any means, and, having been able to see the 2017 total solar eclipse with my younger son on a trip to our niece in TN, it really was an experience that is absolutely worth the effort to see.

By the same token, I wouldn't pay what folks are asking for hotel/B&B/campgrounds, etc., nor would I be willing to spend money to sit in a stadium to see it.  A small family gathering with appropriate equipment (we used a spotting scope to project the eclipse onto a white background, as well as eclipse glasses of course) in a place where you aren't being crowded or having to deal with traffic is far more preferable.  My son and I were able to share the experience together, along with my niece and her family, and it was a memory we will treasure.  If you haven't seen the sun's corona with your naked eyes, you really are missing out.

This year, I live in the path of totality and I'm taking what I learned in 2017 and putting on a presentation for our church home school group and, if the clouds let us, hope to give the children and parents a similar memory.

While I don't understand your view point I will certainly support your right to it.

I cannot understand why anyone would be interested. On previous occasions when it was near enough to get partially dark here I didn't even go outside to look, won't this time either tho we're to be in an 80% darkness area.

For partial eclipse like that, I agree.  80%, 90%, even 99% is an "ok, what's the big deal?" But a total eclipse is different, and I guess if you haven't experienced it, it might be hard to understand.

From what I'm hearing on the "news" , there's
a good many street carnival type things set up
all around the area.
From what I understand,  people have driven
hundreds and thousands of miles to get here
and look up
I started my celebration a few minutes ago
by carrying out the last pre-eclipse sack of
trash for this cycle.
I will soon continue my celebration by preparing
a hamburger to eat
Might even dig out my helmet and do a little
skygazing with the crowd.
No crowds around here though.
B.A.U. here.  Hoodrats getting impaired and
residents going about their usual business

Good Luck to all
