"Air fryers "
« on: April 03, 2024, 03:41:34 PM »
Ok
I guess I'm missing something or I
just don't understand
What does an air fryer do differently
than a small convection oven  ?
I'm not understanding how something
is "fried" without cooking oil/grease.
I've had potato pieces baked ("fries ")
that aren't any different ( to me) than
what they call "air fries"
Just a sales gimmick,  or . . ? ? ?

An Air Fryer is a portable convection oven.
If you have a convection oven just use that.

Yeah.  That's my thoughts, but the relatives and
acquaintances that have purchased the air fryers
say oh no.  It's not an oven, it's an air fryer  :D

A few years ago the boss lady just had to have one and after using it a couple of times it sits on the counter unused and gathering dust.

I use mine also. Not alot, but it gets used. Reheating pizza in it works well.  Then tator tots for the grand kids work well i it also, or breaded chicken strips.  A lot faster, and less electricity than heating up the stove oven.

I have one, and use it fairly often.  I am not by any measure a chef, nor do I gain pleasure from cooking, but since I  prepare much foods from a frozen condition, the air fryer provides a way to make foods crispy, as compared to the microwave, which tends to render things somewhat soggy.

All in all, it's worth the 40-50 bucks I shelled out for it !

Used to use mine more. It has been sitting for awhile, I don’t like the smoke so started using it outside. Now that I have a cook station outside under roof maybe I’ll dig it back out.

A few years ago the boss lady just had to have one and after using it a couple of times it sits on the counter unused and gathering dust.
We have a convection oven cooking range, in 15 some years, I have used the convection setting once, on purpose.

She accidentilly hit the convection oven setting some months back, when I was not here,  and was not happy with how it cooked what ever she cooked, of course, she told me she thought some thing was wrong with the oven because it made an odd noise etc., etc., so I told her that was the convection setting.

I do not like cooking in a micro-wave, so I usually cook with the regular oven, or fry stuff in oil.
I have one of those old school, miniture oven/coffee makers/hot pads in my house down South, and I rarely use that. I cooked some canned beans on the hot pad last month (safety feature, it only runs for 15 minutes) it works ok.

IF, if I/we had an air-fryer, it would end up like some other new cooking gizmos she got, sit unused, some still in the box.
We have two slow-cookers, rarely used, and another one in the box, in the basement (why the third one, ???? ) so I though about taking it down South but got smart, and dug out the very old school, 1960s, slow-cooker- deep fat fryer.  It still works great and can cook from 200 degrees to 450 degrees.

My one cousin, has an eight by eight three season porch.
He has been most fortunate going to casinos, literally it got to the point he never spent money there he did not win at a casino, BUT, in one full corner of his porch, stacked chest high, are boxes of mostly cooking stuff the casinos give away if you have enough points, probably some where in that pile is an Air Fryer.  :o

Only "gadget " thing I've bought and worked hard was
during the breadmaker fad.
It got used all the time. It dissapeared and I found
out one of the relatives had taken a shine to it
and had taken it simultaneously.
Bought a food processor years ago and it's been
worn to a thread doing volume work making salsa
and large batches of coleslaw,  etc.
I dislike cleaning it up, but when time is at a premium
it's the ticket.
Used to have one of those sandwich press/George Foreman
type waffle iron electric doo dads that I used until it
puked. I'd probably buy another if they were reasonably priced

Funny..how different things are used or not used by differing people.  While My wife was still alive  somebody gifted us a bread maker, but
   it mainly collected dust.
I got the air fryer along after my wife was gone, and although I don't use it daily, but probably 2-3 times a week.

I may want to cook up a few chicken nuggets..I can put them in the air fryer, set it for 9 min, and come back when it is done. Surely, doing the
same in a conventional oven, would likely take much longer.

What would you suggest that I check? :) there is an old proverb that states “ never ask a man his problems if you are not willing to help “ :)... BTW, everything you use to cook in creates some degree of smoke, your oven, toaster, frying pan, etc... I no longer care about my air fryer smoking as I use it outdoors...

My brother is one heck of a cook, he loves his air fryer, he's willing to use what ever does the best job, he doesn't care if it uses more or less electricity, so it isn't to save money.

His daughter is the same way, she could have a cooking show on TV.  lol  She also uses and loves her air fryer.

I don't have one, but I should get one as those two above drive me nuts about how good they work.  lol

I have and use a small 110 electric convection oven that
I bought not quite 15 years ago, and it works pretty good
for what I use it for.  A dozen or less biscuits,  those cinnamon
rolls in a tube,  small pan of cornbread,  etc.
I'd originally bought it to use at the shack way back when, but
it never made the trip.  I've used the convection feature
probably 3 times.
Several relatives and acquaintances have air fryers,  and
always talk them up, but I couldn't see anything exceptional
about them myself. Oh well.  . .  As long as what everyone
has is satisfactory.  . . ;)

No need for an apology, Pretty sure the reason why mine smokes is using olive oil which has a lower smoke point and not keeping the basket as clean as I could. So, outside it goes and the joy of infrequent cleaning continues :)

I was going to ask if you use olive oil. It does smoke at lower temps than other oils.  I got my air fryer from my son (the throw away, buy another generation) When you pulled the basket and bottom pan out of the fryer. the basket would separate from the bottom pan.  So I took it apart and found the latch spring for the basket release had slipped off a piece that holds the spring in place. Put it back together, and has been working fine ever since.

Looking back...I don't use oil in my air fryer.  Not being any kind of a chef, I usually use it for stuff from the freezer.

I guess that is why mine doesn't smoke.... ;) ;D   I normally use oil only in certain recipes or for frying.. which in the present case it would be
a Crisco combination of..canola. sunflower and soy bean oil combno.
