The rate of gun theft from cars has tripled in the United States since 2013, according to a new study published Thursday by gun safety group Everytown.

The authors analyzed FBI crime data from 337 small to large cities in 44 states covering about 63 million people. In 2013 there were 21 gun thefts from automobiles per 100,000 people.

By 2022, the rate of theft had increased threefold to 63.1 firearms stolen from cars per 100,000. The study noted that while gun theft from cars has risen over 200% during that time, overall theft from vehicles has decreased 11%.

Of the 112,000 guns reported stolen in 2022, about 51% were taken from cars. That figure of roughly 62,000 guns amounts to an average of at least one firearm stolen every nine minutes from a vehicle in the U.S.

The study noted that the rate of gun theft from cars is 18 times higher when the city is located in a state with less restrictive gun laws. Memphis has the highest rate of gun theft from cars with Atlanta, St. Louis, and Richmond, Virginia, and San Antonio rounding out the top five.

The authors noted a law passed in Tennessee in 2014 that allowed all legal gun owners to store firearms in parked vehicles. They noted that since 2013, more than 29,000 guns have been stolen from vehicles in the state.

Evergreen emphasized the importance of the study in that stolen gun are often used to then commit other crimes. During the same 10-year period, gun homicides increased 85% in Tennessee.

The authors said that while they encouraged legislators to pass further gun regulations, the problem of stolen guns from cars could be greatly reduced by gun owners simply locking their vehicles and securing firearms so they are not visible.

All gun owners have a moral responsibility to keep them safe from those who would steal and use them for criminal activities.

so what do you consider safe. moral responsibility sounds like something the left would say. i have the responsibility to follow the law not someones opinion on whats moral because if you ask 20 people youll get 20 answers and the bottom line is i carry a gun for protection and want it handy. if you think a locked door or glove box will stop anything your smoking crack. always told dad at camp. leave the doors unlocked and it will save you the price of a broken window or busted down door. i guess maybe its different up here there are a LOT of people with guns in their car and ive never heard of even one being stolen. i guess the real answer is to get the hell away from those high crime areas.

Common sense would say...time to reinstitute the "stop and frisk" policy that worked so well for Mayor Guliani..  Of course gun thefts by habitual
criminals is up, since they rarely truly get punished adequately for the crime.

Think it over..honestly carried, registered firearms are carried for good, defensive reasons. Such guns stolen by a theif..is  taken puirely to commit
more crimes..and the theif should be treated as such..

..And yes, we as legal carriers, do have some moral responsibility...IMO..  We shouldn't leave loaded guns laying around home, where small
children can play with trhem...and as we should do as much as we can to restrict some pinhead theif from easy access and more crimes.

You know, my late brother tried that with his cabin in Washington. Didn't seem to work. So he finally started leaving the door open, some still damaged the door mechanism. For some it seems to just be cussedness. There are always some like that around.

Ya know.....just because a state says you have the permission to leave your firearms in your vehicle, doesn't mean you're REQUIRED to.
And, to top it off, they passed it into law, and the media published it, probably on the front page, and every criminal around realized that there was now a ready supply of guns available for them to easily steal.  Could the outcome have been any more obvious?

If a gun is stolen from a car every 9 minutes, there must be a lot of people leaving their gun in their car.  If you want to leave your gun in your car that is your choice, but really it doesn't do any good in your car if you are else ware, and need it. About the only time I have left my gun in the car is when I had to go into the courthouse.

Perhaps not so simple as it seems., some backward state governments add to the problem.  They make stupid laws that say a person with a CCW,
cannot enter any business establishment, unless that establishment has a sign displayed that they welcome CCW people.

Beyond these states, I believe youi will find that most government buildings are automatically on the "no carry" list. Banks, libraries, nursing
   homes, various governmental offices etc..

So if you are carrying and need to stop by the post office, bank or pay a water bill...how do you handle that ?

. . .   So if you are carrying and need to stop by the post office, bank or pay a water bill...how do you handle that ?
More than a few years ago, the
place I was working at had a separate
employee parking lot from the actual
property that they leased from an
adjacent property, a large hotel.
There had been a couple of vehicle
break ins and a couple of robberies
so quite a few of us were pocket
and IWB carrying daily.
I got in the habit of having something
at all times all day long, and there
came a payday that it slipped my
mind and I was standing in line at
a large branch bank and when I got
to the head of the line to be next
at a teller window, I stuck my hand
in my pocket and had my surprise
for the week. Man you talk about
sweat beads on the forehead.
I can't think of any bank that
allows customers to carry, but
I managed to skate that day.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Did that with the PO once. Just didn't say anything and everything was fine. Closed mouth is often a good/wise state.

However; the consequences could be great..depending upon the political leanings of the politicos...and if they want to "make an example"..

i leave a small 9 in all my vehicles. i dont really have a need to carry all day every day up here so i put one in the vehicle with both an owb and iwb holster so i need to go into someplace like a walmart ect i can grab it and go and put it back when im done. maybe if i lived in a higher crime area id go back to all day carry. but in the decades that have come and gone since they passed cc in michigan i havent heard of a single instance in the Upper Peninsula where i live of a concealed licensed civilian has even drawn his gun let alone had to use it. ive used my truck guns once. that was to dispatch an injured deer that someone else hit. now if i head down state to the grand daughters i carry and would certainly in one of the crazy cities down there but i find it better just not to go into a city. nothing there i want or need. havent been to a city in MI since i was in the service. like i said if i lived in an area that dangerous id have left years ago. i can see it if its where you have to work but most of us are retied and surely arent stuck in a high crime area. Up here more than half the people dont lock their house even when they go to work. only time my house is locked is if im out of town for the night.

I have walked into a bank and my local post office many times while carrying. There is no law in Pa that says you can't carry into a bank, and my bank has no signs saying you can't. As for the post office its out of sight out of mind. They haven't started body searches yet at my local post office, or set up metal detectors.
