Not really, Mexico has always been part of North America, the isthmus is Central America  and he part shaped like a chile is South America.

No! As described above, Mexico has always been North America in maps of this hemisphere.

Interesting!  While quite true, I can't help but wonder why I've heard Hispanic people call us "Norte Americanos" in a derogatory sense.  Do they not consider themselves as residing in North America?

  Yes; technically central America does not include Mexico.  But from there on it can be murky, since Panama was once part of Columbia..

It appears to me that the Central America label is simply posted a little high on the map. Mexico is part of North America. Put the label a little lower and you wouldn’t be able to see Central America.
