I am (partly) in agreement with the concept, but.........

Leave the infrastructure in place, with about a TOTAL of 500 employees, distributed equally in capital cities in each state.  Use the DC contingent to distribute the WHOLE Department of Education budget, by percentage of students, to each state.  From there, the state's 10-member staff distributes it, again by percentage of students, to each county.  At that point, COUNTY employees distribute it, again by percentage of students, to each school district.  WITH ABSOLUTELY NO STRINGS ATTACHED! In that way that money is still there, (probably more than before), and if we're all lucky, we can eliminate school board's authority to keep raising our property taxes as they wish.  (Another peeve of mine.)

He is not simply shutting down the Dept of Ed..  He is sending those rights back to the individual states..so he is doing essentially  just what you said.

   AI Overview

Education is generally considered a state and local responsibility in the United States, with the 10th Amendment reserving powers not delegated to the federal government to the states, and the 14th Amendment ensuring equal protection under the law.
Here's a more detailed explanation:

I believe we as a nation should dissolve all government education unless someone wants to pay for it themselves. Parents should get together and hire teachers and supply a structure for education. Then hash out the details…

By the constitution, education is states rights...and correctly so..  What works best in Montana, may not work as well in Florida..

What works well in Maine, may not work as well in southern California...same between Alaska and Hawaii..

I recently read where formal education is only somewhat recent and people were better educated beforehand. I may have to retrieve said book for pertinent information. Written by a teacher no less and probably detested by his peers.
