Does anyone have a good source for .256WM ammo?

256 Brass --Gun List
« Reply #1 on: March 28, 2004, 02:20:37 PM »
There was a guy in gun list in the reloading section that advertised 256 brass formed out of 357 mag brass. It has been a couple of years ago when I had a 256 WM. You might check with Ed TC's I traded him barrel and a bunch of brass for another barrel. Good luck.

I can't help you with a source of loaded ammo, as I think most of it is in the hands of collectors.  I can, however, make some suggestions for forming brass that has worked very well for me.  Of course, you can form from .357 Mag using an expensive form set or using a .30 Mauser die as an intermediate step, but I had significant brass loss and case life wasn't very good.  You might want to try one of the following methods.

1.  Get some .22 Jet brass from Graf's, if they still have some, and just use a tapered expander in your .256 Mag sizer to open it up.  It will fireform upon the first firing.  The case will be about .030-.050" short, but it works fine.  So far, case life has been fine.

2.  Exchange your extractor for one for a .223 Rem and go get some .221 Fireball brass.  Size it in your .256 die and trim to length (you'll have to trim off quite a bit).  This is a VERY strong case and seems to last forever.  Naturally, it headspaces on the shoulder, but you should set your dies so the .256 case does that anyhow for decent case life.

Plan one is my lifetime plan for my Merrill pistol, as it has to use a rimmed case.  Plan 2 is my lifetime plan for my Contenders to keep them shooting.

Hope this helps you.  Let us know your experiences.

and brass, Had an octagon barrel for a while but sold it. Still have dies, brass and some factory rounds...always thought that I'd get one in bull configuration, but haven't as yet. This stuff is really scarce, haven't tried to form any from .357 brass but have heard that it doesn't hold up as well.
E-mail me and maybe we can do some trading.Meanwhile I'll go see exactly what I've got.

I've made .256 cases from Winchester brass (not nickel plated) 357 mag. cases and they have held up well for me.  8)

I use new winchester 357 brass and anneal it before forming in a regular 256 sizing die.  Wasn't having much luck trying to form cases without the annealing though.  Just set the cases upright in a low pan  and cover the case heads with 3/8" of water.  I use 2 propane torches, one in each hand and go down  a row of cases, flame on each side until they glow  and then let them cool off.  This reduces the cracked necks and dented shoulders from 35 to 5%.  I load them with 60 gr hornadys over 18 gr of AA1680 for 2820 fps out of a carbine barrel and accurate too.  Really plays hell with coyotes, groundsquirrel, and gr.hogs.

Never had any trouble making cases using 256 sizer die and Winchester brass. Winchester was the only one that would make it through the process.
