Okay, I should have thought of it sooner, but this rifle and H&R 'service'(?) really had me ticked off.  I took an old cleaning rod and checked the twist on my Ultra Varmint .243.  I guess they were serious when they said varmint on this gun.  The twist is 1 in 12", not 1 in 10".  That pretty much explains the tumbling of any longer bullets.  I guess I'll turn this thing into a varmint only rifle and see if I can get the super lightweight .24 caliber bullets to work.  Does anyone have any pet 55-65 grain loads work up?

Warthog,

Bis (Kbisbee on the old forum) is suspecting the same thing in his .243.  He had some 100 gr Federal's that were keyholing, so he wrote to Federal about it and they sent him another box of 100 gr.  I loaded a few 100 gr for him a month or so ago and he said they did the same as the Federal's, just not as bad.

Looks like you both have a .244/.243 instead of a 6mm/.243 on your hands!

Sorry if that wasn't mentioned before.  For some reason NEF treats the 243 like Rem did on the intro of their 6mm.

Most guys here have better luck with 75 to 85gr bullets.  They seem to get great accuracy from them.  just like the 223's will not handle 60 and up bullets like most other brands do.

Try some of Hornady 58gr V Max BTs I/ve been useing 40.grs of IMR 3031,That is almost max according to hornady min is 35.2@3300fps max is 40.2@3800fps I've been getting a little more like 4000fps or real close, They also list nine other powders for this round. I also use some bulk pack 60gr JP FMJs nothing to brag about but they'll print 2" at 100yrds good for burning powder. 8)

Warthog,

I shot a 6mm Rem for years, for deer hunting, with 85 gr Nosler solid base bullets.  A 1 in 12" should stabilize 90 or 95 gr bullets without  problems and can be used for deer hunting.  Just because it won't stabilize a 100 gr doesn't mean you can only hunt varmints!

I've tried 70 to 100 grains and it's not stabilizing any of them.

You should have entitled this thread try the REALLY obvious!!!  Guys, the FAQ's at the top of the page lists the .243 as having a 1 in 10 twist. Many of us feel perhaps they should change the twist rate on a couple of their barrels but they aren't hiding it, it's all out there for us to anguish over. The FAQ's might be a good place to check before we try to work a load for our pet guns....<><.... :grin: (oops! just re-read your post, yours is 2 in 12"? That is strange, I would think a call and new barrel is in order if you bought it thinking it was the advertised 1 in 10"...)

I don't have any problems with my 243 Ultra 24" hvy barrel, but ya gots me to wondering what my barrel twist was.  So I just checked it out and it is a 1-10 twist.  I wonder when they changed the twist or if ya get a strange one???

I'd call the CS at NEF and talk to them about it.  I'd ask for a new barrel.
