???s about SKS stock
« on: March 30, 2004, 06:44:41 AM »
Just picked up a Yugo SKS and I am quite happy with the operation.

The problem is with the stock, it's a real club. Like aiming a baseball bat.

Primary problem is that the stock has too little drop and I am forced to scrunch my face down into the stock to get a proper sight alignment.

Do any of the aftermarket stocks have a greater drop?

I don't care if I get a Dragunov style, Monte Carlo or whatever so long as I have more drop.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Choate Stocks

You might try the following website
http://www.riflestock.com/

Then go to the "find it fast" pull down menu and pull down the convensional SKS stock

I have a green plastic Choate stock for one of my two SKS rifles.  I got it for my youngest son to help him better use the rifle.  I also installed a red dot Tasco scope/aiming device on a DC Engineering scope mount.

The stock was relatively easy to fit with the exception of the front gas tube.  That took just a little time to figure out what piece needed to be slightly modified in size.  The rest of it fit very easily.

I also liked the DC Engineering scope mount as it was very very low and gave the red dot a good feel with the Choate Stock.

This SKS combo is a fast pointing and surprisingly accurate firearm.

The ramline stocks works pretty well. I've got one on a norinco that I've got. My yugo wouldn't work with any other stcks though. I can't get the trigger to snap in. Might just be my yugo though cause I've seen other with after market stocks.

When I'm in prone there ain't no way way I can aquire a sight picture with this GI stock.

There is a 1" spacer that is sold for the butt of the sks to add to the length it may work for you or you could double it up too until the gun fits the length you need.  But some say the 1" makes a big difference in it.                                                          BigBill

Well I tried the spacer thing and the length of pull is too long. I added one inch to the stock and it's like a Thompson sub gun, way to long for me.

What I am wondering is if the aftermarket stocks are any better??????

Most of the aftermarket stocks that I have seen are higher in the comb than the original.

Yugo SKS's are junk

They have 1 redeeming quality... they are CHEAP.  You cannot argue with cheap but those blooming things weigh MORE than an M-1 Garand.  The one I had weighed in at over 10 lbs.  It is a tribute to Communist engineering.  The entire rifle is like it was designed by committee.  The grenade launcher is ridiculously over weight and complicated, BUT they are cheap.  Should you buy one?  Absolutely, you might be able to trade for a real Chineese or Russian SKS.
